Any input would be great. My son is interested in studying business/finance. He has a 3.55 unweighted GPA, is 45 in his class of 280 students, has taken mostly honor level and a few AP courses. SAT scores are really poor-has taken 2 prep courses, taken test twice and has scored 560-Math and 520-Reading. He has always done poorly on tests and so don't think he will ever shine on SAT's.
Have toured about 15 schools, many in Mid-Atlantic region and also in New England. Some of the schools we visited are so out of reach, but did not want to discourage him. He is beginning to have a reality check at this point and realizes many of the schools he likes are not going to happen.
To help really narrow his focus, could anyone offer some insight into schools with good business programs for a kid that is just an average, hard working kid. Septembermom

If he is a CT resident or somewhere in the midwest where not many kids apply to uconn.... than UConn would be worth a look. Although they would look down on his SAT score, they're obsessed with class rank. His GPA is also kinda low for UConn, but it's worth applying to. The business school has a brand new facility (ranked top 10) which will help the business school rise. He won't get in if he's a MA, NJ, NY, or NH resident...but otherwise it's definitely worth it.

I would suggest putting your post in the business major forum. You should get more helpful replies there. Some good business programs for your “average, hardworking” son would include:

Northeast
-Penn St. (should be a reach)
-Univ. Maryland

Midwest
-Indiana University
-Purdue
-Univ. of Minnesota
-Ohio St.
-Mich St.

More good schools that are more than likely out of reach for your son:

-Univ. of Illinois
-Univ. of Wisconsin

Some of these schools offer direct admission into their business programs, but more than likely your son wouldn't qualify. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for your reply. We did visit the U of Maryland-beautiful campus, but none of the others your mentioned.

We did look at UCONN, but heard the same comment regarding admission (well, they kind of tiptoed around a direct answer) as we are NH residents.
Thanks so much for replying.
