G-Town, UVa., etc...

I am trying to assess whether my son has a decent chance at some of the quality business schools. He did 1430/2140 on his SAT I ( he took them over again and should have his score this week ). He is currently 15 of 575 in his class.. he is in a special Intl. Studies program in his h.s. ( a considerable amount of honors and AP classes ). He mentioned that his GPA is around 4.5 (W). We are in NJ. I was originally thinking that maybe schools like G-Town, UVa, etc...were in reach; then reading all the articles lately made be a bit concerned. Then again, probably nothing to lose by trying some of these schools. Some other ones I had in mind were GW, Lehigh, NYU, UMd, Penn State, IU.... ( Hard to find some other good, smaller private colleges for biz ). Thanks. J

those are pretty good scores, i think UVA and maybe even Gtown are within reach.

Congratulations! Your son has great scores and he'll be competitive at all of the schools you've mentioned. What field is he looking to go into business?

Also, if you're from VA, UVA would probably be the best route to go, as it is cost-efficient and its McIntire is a great program.

You can add a few more good programs to the list. Your son has the stats to potentially (although not likely of course, since those programs are reaches for almost all applicants) get into any of the top programs. He should definitely check out:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)
New York University (Stern)
University of California-Berkeley (Haas)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (Ross)
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)

Other good programs include

Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper)
Cornell University
Emory University (Guizuetta)
Georgetown University (McDonough)
Indiana University-Bloomington (Kelley)
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Kenan Flagler)
University of Notre Dame (Mendoza)
University of Southern California (Marshall)
Washington University-St Louis (Olin)

You should also know that admission at some of these colleges mean you are already in the business school, while admission at some means you still need to apply later to the business school.

The ones where you will need to apply for the business school later:

Apply in freshman year for admittance in the sophomore year:
University of Michigan (although they do offer guaranteed spots as incoming freshmen to the 100 highest-ranked high school students accepted to Michigan that plan to major in business)

Apply in sophomore year for admittance in the junior year:
University of Virginia
University of California--Berkeley
University of North Carolina

Also, Alexandre is too humble to say so--but he is "the" expert on University of Michigan on this site--so if you have any questions about that school, be sure to ask him.
