Business, Sociology and Political Science

These are the things I could see myself studying. I declared Business as my major for all the colleges I applied to. Right now its down to Northeastern and UMass Dartmouth. As of right now I have full intentions of going to law school right after college. For a while I really thought I wanted to major in polisci but then I kinda lost interest and was with business for a while. Then I took a sociology class and I absolutely loved it. I'm at a loss at what to do. I was thinking Marketing with a minor in sociology or maybe polisci with a minor in sociology. Additionally, the University of Massachusetts is opening up their law school, and they have a 6 year program at UMass dartmouth to get a bachelors and JD. The only thing is that the law school isn't accredited by the American Bar Association but I believe they're working on getting it accredited. Sorry if this is all just rambling I guess i'm looking for some sort of insight.

Ok - if law school is the goal don’t stress about the major, just do something you like. I would have to say, of the three, PoliSci is probably your best bet (of course, this comes from someone working on his PhD in the subject…) followed by business. Combining sociology/polisci in any major/minor form is useless because you’re just going over the same skills. Pick one or the other and pair it with business in some form. Another important consideration is what type of law you want to practice. Obviously a business degree is more useful if you want to do corporate law or work in some business-related field. On a final note, if that law school isn’t accredited avoid it with a passion. Joint BA/JD programs tend to suck anyway. You’ll be much better off going the traditional route.

Wow thats a lot of good insight! I never thought about the polisci/sociology similarities but now I can see it! I got into UMass Amherst yesterday and I’ve been seriously thinking about it now. Its the same price as Dartmouth with a much more rigorous course of study and much better polisci department. I actually got denied admission to the Amherst business school, so I guess thats out of the question. I’m thinking Political Science with a minor in Business.

If your intention is law school you should realize that the most important thing come law school admissions time is your LSAT score and your GPA. You need or should major in what you love because frankly you’re bound to do best in those majors.
Research all the business majors at the schools you applied because some business schools might grade with a curve which means that could be a disservice to your gpa.

You aren’t in college yet, my advise is to go for the best school you can get into at the cheapest price, then decide on a major come the end of your sophomore year. When you enter college you’ll have to take general ed, that will generally fulfill requirements for poly sci/sociology and business majors. Once you have taken classes then decide on a major. If you are in state for U Mass, stick to U Mass because you need to save money for law school. Northeastern is not worth the sticker price unless they give you enough financial aid that it becomes as cheap to attend there as if you were to attend U Mass.
