Butler? How good is it?

Im seriously considering entering Butler this fall. Does anybody plan to study there? Or heard any comments? Please post anything youve heard. Im sure it will help me!

Anybody out there with a little bit of Butler knowledge? Please?

well, I know 2 students that go there and seem to like it just fine. I actually attended a speech tournament there this december, and the students that hosted it were very friendly and welcoming. Campus is nice, and I'm pretty sure the academics are pretty good. I'm not sure how selective they are, but in comparison to regular state schools I know they are up there at least in Indiana. Once that decided to go there is interested in pharmacy, and seems to be very happy. I also know that they give merit money. Both of these students had SAT's in the 1300's and got near 10,000.

Thanks for the info Zena, do you really think academics are pretty good? Thats what worries me the most.

US News says that Butler ranks 7th of the top Midwestern Universitites-master's and is "more selective" so I wouldn't say that they have poor academics, you may want to check out their website to see more that they have to offer because I really don't know any specifics, I'm sorry:)

What really worries me is that its ranks isnt available. Ive heard about its being 7th for MBAs in Business in the Midwest, but how about undergraduate ranking? Gosh, am I talking alone?

Zena, I guess we crossed replies. Thanks a lot, Ive been almost all over the site. But Ill check again, hopefully something will come up. By the way do you live in Indiana?

They sent me recruit stuff for swimming and I've got a friend that almost went there, I think. It's a pretty good school, but not what I was looking for (LAC). I know pharmaceuticals are good there, but I don't know what else.

Their preschool program is excellent, as is obvious from the manifold accomplishments of their proud alumnus, fiddlefrog...

Also, Butler has an ok music program (that tends to be overshadowed by its neighbor in Bloomington). I think a number of Indianapolis Symphony people teach there. The neighborhood is nice, but just outside of Butler area is... well, the artsy-yet-crime-ridden ghetto I was born in. I love that place, but can't recommend it on grounds of safety or quality of life.

Thanks sdskyle and fiddlefrog. Fiddlefrog, did you study there? And if you dont mind me asking, what were your accomplishments? Are the teachers good? I had not heard about the safety thing, thanks loads for that piece of info. Im sorry to ask so many questions but I want as much information from outside the school staff as possible.

The kid with the a below 1000 SAT and the worst GPA in my high school (granted a good high school) went there.

What??? Omg! really? Im an international student, from Ecuador, Ive got a 700 M and 680 V (SAT I), i diddnt know that! Slipper1234> Do you know any good school, with a very competitive academic programme that has rolling admission deadlines?

I previously posted the following information about Butler in another thread:

Being from Indiana, I know a little bit about Butler. Butler is a pretty decent school in a nice part of Indianapolis. The Butler campus is quite attractive and is situated on the banks of the Wabash River. I would say it is a medium-sized school -- about 4,000 undergrads. My guess that well over half of the students are from Indiana, with the vast majority of the rest of the students from surrounding midwestern states. Consequently, the students at Butler tend to be politically and religiously conservative, though not in-your-face Bible thumpers.

Butler has a particularly strong music program and is well known in these parts for their school of pharmacy (Purdue and Butler are the only schools that have pharmacy programs in Indiana). Personally, I know two people who graduated from Butler. One is a pharmacist and picked Butler over Purdue because he wanted a smaller program with more individualized attention. The other person I know who went there was biology major and she is now a high school biology teacher. Both of them speak well of the school and are very happy with the quality of education they received.

Fair or not, in terms of educational quality, in my mind I lump Butler in with schools such as Valparaiso, Bradley, Drake, and Creighton. To give you an idea of my range, my perception is that Tulsa is a just above those schools in terms of resources and quality, while Oakland University in Michigan is just a tad below Butler et.al. in terms of resources and quality.

In sum, Butler is a nice school school on a nice campus -- the Buick LeSabre of educational institutions. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot icemaker, your way of ranking Butler was very helpful. Would you happen to know anything about Economics (Business management) at Butler? I know Purdue is so much better in that point of view, but then i doesnt offer financial aid for first years, does it?

In my opinion, both Indiana University (Kelley) and Purdue University (Krannert) have stronger reputations than Butler. I may be wrong here, but I believe that roughly one-third of the students at Butler get their degree from the Business School. They also have an MBA program, but I think that it geared toward serving the part-time student.

In my opinion, you would probably get a solid education in econ if you go there. I don't know if they offer a business management degree to the undergraduate (they offer an array of somewhat specialized business-type degrees), so you will want to check that out before you decide.

If you are looking to get into a top MBA program after you graduate and have a few years of experience, in my opinion you would probably be better off going to either Kelley or Krannert. However, if this is one of your goals, I would ask the Admissions people at Butler if they have any stats as to how many of their grads go on and get their MBAs at places like Chicago, Ross, Kelley, Krannert, and Kellogg (I would focus on those 5 simply because they are all in the Midwest, the vast majority of Butler's students are Midwesterners, and by most accounts those 5 previously mentioned business schools have the strongest reputations in the Midwest).

With regard to financial aid at Purdue, I really don't know how they treat internationals.

Thanks once again for being so helpful, I will find out about ths statistics. Ive already re checked, Purdue, and unfortunately there is no financial aid for int. first years. Ill check out Indiana. Do post any piece of information you find out, up to now, i reapeat theyve been really helpfull.

Ive just checked Indiana, and fortunately they do awar some fin aid for international student, given their academic records an SAT score, mine is a little low but i hope they find my academic record a good one. Fortunately they still have open deadlines.

I think Fiddlefrog meant that he attended the preschool that they run (I assume as part of their early childhood development program). And I'm guessing what he said was rather tongue in cheek. Am I right?

Elinowy,

I would honestly avoid Butler. You seem like a very strong student and its reputation isnt close to Purdue or Indiana (Kelley). It also isnt the most diverse place, which an international might not like! I think its pretty late in the process for US schools...

Thanks Elizabeth, & Thanks slipper1234, i am going to try to avid Butler and try Indiana and Minnesota if they will have me. I know its late, but ill try, they still have open deadlines. I cant lose much, and if i get in ill win loads. Thanks very much for your concern.
