Can anyone tell me more about BYX (the Christian fraternity)? More specifically, its reputation, the type of students it attracts, and the sororities that it interacts with.

Thanks!

Thanks!

BYX has a overall good reputation on campus. There are obviously those that dont care for them, but over they are seen as funny, fun loving guys. I know 4 guys who pledged BYX this spring and 2 who are rushing in fall. They come from all sorts of places and are just nice funny guys. They interact with all the sororities on some level. Singing at all 10 chapters this semester and swapping with a few. At the semiformal in the fall i saw some members of all sororities their and know that girls from them all are attending the Formal trip next weekend. Overall funny christian guys that like to goof off

Well, I can give you a good bit of info, since I’m friends with a number of the guys. :)

As a Christian frat, BYX at Vandy is pretty hardcore about it. You sign a contract saying that you won’t drink, have premarital sex, etc. I’m Jewish, so, I mean, I won’t be marrying one of them, but I’m not at all sorry for the girls that will. The guys are GREAT. Outgoing, funny, complete gentlemen, and for the most part, pretty dang cute.

The reputation on campus, AFAICT, is somewhat like that of the lower-tier sororities: negative and completely undeserved. The guys get a bad rep for being “goody two-shoes.” What this means in real-person terms is that these are the old-fashioned guys who will still pull out the chair for their girlfriends on dates and hold open the door. Likewise, they hang out with girls who are more old-fashioned and have (undeserved) negative reputations. A lot of my DG friends hang out with BYX boys, as do some Chi Os I know. I would definitely say that BYX and DG (especially with this year’s pledge class in DG… a lot of religious girls) have some stronger ties.

Basically, if you’re not obsessed with being part of the more “elite” crowd on Vandy’s campus (i.e., the Theta-SAE-KA-Tri-Delt or the Kappa-Beta-Pike crowd), you have traditional values and morals, and you are pretty hardcore about being Christian, you’ll love our BYX chapter.

thats about right. but the BYX guys do get out a bit. they have a big party in the fall and 2 in the spring that are always fun and sober :)

oh, definitely, they absolutely do. Funny and fun-loving is a great way to put it, and they don’t need alcohol to enjoy themselves. As I said… great bunch of guys – IF you’re into more of a Christian lifestyle. If you don’t have much room in your life for Jesus, but you want to be in a dry frat, go to Phi Delt. They just got their charter back.

Awesome, thanks for all the info! BYX sounds like a good fit for someone like me

Does the fact that they arn’t IFC impact anything? I’m not very familiar with how that affects things

Well, they don’t have a house. If that’s a deal to you, IDK what to tell you! Chapter meetings are in Kirkland Hall on campus; I’ve sung with my a cappella group at BYX chapter (best thing ever… the guys cheer so much), and it’s a really nice room.

I mean, BYX is definitely recognized on campus as a frat, but is subject to judgment by the “elite” frat-soro crowd (then again, so is my sorority, but I really don’t care, and it hasn’t affected me; I’m still friends with a few Thetas and Tri-Delts). I don’t think not being IFC will do you any sort of harm.
