So it looks like I’m gonna get a C in Calculus AB-AP for quarters 1 & 2. I am a mostly A student with no more than 2 B’s in a year…4.41 GPA overall. I didn’t get a C because of “senioritis”, it’s more like taking 6 AP’s, presiding over 4 organizations a week, completing several hours a week at my internship, and doing college apps has made all of my grades go down because there is not enough time in the day or energy to do all of it. I know that colleges want my first quarter grade reports, will this impact my chance of getting into a competitive school like Georgetown, UMD, Villanova etc.?
Hey, did you apply early anywhere?
Yes I did…The following are EA/priority
UMD:Accepted
Villanova:Accepted
Penn State:Accepted
Georgetown:Deferred
Temple:Accepted
I have 9 more schools to hear from (including Georgetown) and all of them are much more difficult to get into than the ones I applied to early. I do have a C 1st and 2nd in Calc (and a D on the midterm) which really is unfortunate. However, my GPA every quarter this year has been at least a 4.43, which is more than my cumulative GPA from freshman to junior year. I have a very strong resume, good recc letters, and lots of good internships. Do you think that schools will outweigh the bad Calc grade with the positives?
Looks like you are already into a nice group of schools. You can check each college’s website but the general rule often quoted on CC is to avoid D’s, F’s and felonies once you are accepted into a college to avoid the possibility of an acceptance being rescinded. Do whatever it takes to keep the calc grade at least in the C range (academically you can see teacher after class, get a tutor, use online resources) or give up a club, internship etc. so you have more time to work on the subject.
In terms of the more competitive schools you haven’t heard back from, a C in Calc certainly won’t help your case but nobody can predict what will happen in terms of admissions to competitive schools. Good luck.
