This year i’m taking AP lit, but as of now i think i have a C in the class. On our last midterm report, I had a B (my school doesn’t give out exact grades for mid terms, only report cards), but I just got a C+ on an important in class essay. I have an A or A+ in everything else right now, and this teacher is notorious for her tough grading and favoritism. From what i hear, most people get a C in her AP class. I had an A+ in AP Lang last year and am worried that a C in AP Lit will prevent me from getting accepted to good schools (particularly MIT). Will this throw out any chance of me getting in?
My gut says no. But it depends on what you want to study at MIT. I forget sometimes you could major in English Lit there!
I think schools know there are “math” brains and “lit” brains. A few have both, but not many. Try not to sweat it. Do go see the teacher to see what you could do to improve on the next paper.
I’m applying as an intended physics major, so i guess literature isn’t too important for that! I’m just worried that a C will stick out and look really bad.
MIT does have a humanities and writing requirement, so you might want to take that into account…
Admission to MIT is to the Institute, not to any school or degree program. The admissions requirements are identical regardless of whether you are planning to study Nuclear Engineering, Linguistics, Urban Planning, Chemistry or Architecture. The intended major is interesting, but not really relevant for the admissions decision. That being said, usually a single poor grade will not hurt you. (I got in early to MIT with a single C on my high school transcript). It doesn’t help but the basic rule applies, there is No one thing that will get you in, and very few things that alone will keep you out (for example not speaking or understanding English).
