<p>I heard people saying that music department at Calarts is awesome because they encourage students' uniqueness and creativity. But I also heard people saying that graduates of Calarts do not know how to play an instrument and they don't learn anything.</p>
<p>I plan to major in composition and I aspire to do classical, experimental, contemporary composition, as well as film scoring and sound design. Does anybody know about the music programs in Calarts?</p>
<p>hey.......first of all John Debney studied there...he is an amazing film composer..the school is very progressive, almost radically "hip."<br>
You should also check USC and UCLA also for film scoring.<br>
For experimental Oberlin is great too.
Onestly i think CalArts is a bit too "crazy" for my taste so i would not go there :)</p>
<p>my roommate is in the masters program for brass and he practices so much and ive heard him and his friends play, so they do know what they're doing and they work their ass off.. its definitely more experimental but they're so immersed in their music its crazy. that goes for probably all the music majors ive met, they're crazy in love with what they do.</p>
<p>My S was thinking of applying but decided that it might be better to do his graduate work there. </p>
<p>I did a little research and understand that some art students are upset because the Music Dept. gets an equal share of the school's revenue even though they have far less students than animation or art. That's good for the music students!</p>
