So i qualify for Cal Grant A which will give me about 11,000 to go towards tuition, I also qualify for the UC Blue and Gold Scholarship which covers "system wide fees" which is basically tuition as far as I've heard. So i was wondering if this means i would end up getting around 20,000 or do they cancel each other out? As in, does the Blue and Gold scholarship feed from the Cal Grant to pay for the "system wide fees"?

Blue&Gold is just a guarantee that your systemwide fees will be covered through a combination of grants and scholarships. If there is any shortfall, a UC Fee Grant will be applied to make up the difference.

However, since both Cal Grant A and B cover systemwide fees (they’re not allowed to call them tuition, but this is what the fees are), then Blue&Gold has been met. They’re not so much canceling each other out, but rather one is just meeting the promise the other makes with only one grant aid source.

Oh, ok, yea I get it. So kinda like I said up there, that one is feeding the other, i might end up with more from like academic scholarships and stuff but its not like im gonna be funneled 11k from each. thanks

I wouldn’t call it so much feeding as just a program that has been suspiciously vague in details having its goals met through one source. But I guess that’s just all semantics like the whole “fee” versus “tuition” debate ;).

To be honest, Blue&Gold is only beneficial if you somehow don’t make the cutoff for Cal Grant or were awarded Cal Grant B and are a freshman. Well, and if there’s a mid-year increase in systemwide fees since Cal Grant (to my knowledge) cannot be increased mid-year.

You might get lucky and receive some grant money from the individual UC itself depending on your EFC and what funds are available.

yea, Blue and Gold is very vague, and my EFC is about $3,500
