I'm a freshman student at SDSU and this is what my financial aid account at SDSU looks like:

Fall / Spring

Federal Pell Grant $1590 /$1590
Cal Grant B $824 / $824
State University Grant$2736 / $2736
Total $5150 / $5150

My basic tuition fees are $6866 for both spring and fall and I'll be using my grants and student loans to pay for them in the fall.
For housing, I have to pay around $1600 each month.
My question is, will I get $5150 during the fall and $5150 during the spring or am I receiving all my grants for the whole year at once? I will be living on campus and I need money for my housing payments each month and I was wondering if I could use the money that i'm receiving during the spring to pay for my housing during the fall? it would be easier for me to use that money in the fall while i figure out how to get the rest of the money for the spring payments. Thanks.

The grants are split between the semesters and it looks like you are getting 5150 each semester. So you will have to come up with housing on you own it seems. For freshman year you can borrow your federal direct loan of 5,500 but that will also be divided between the semesters.

Are you within commuting distance to live at home? If not one thing to do is to look for cheaper off campus housing. Hopefully you are working this summer because you will also need to buy books and have something for personal expenses. It seems you won’t be able to go if your parents can’t help you come up with the difference.

SDSU housing will be expensive because housing in the county of San Diego, overall, is expensive.

The FA office will not pay you in cash, they will have you endorse checks to the university for your tuition for that semester. Any residual monies are given to you for books. I don’t think you’ve really thought this out well. It looks like you’ve picked an expensive housing option. https://newscenter.sdsu.edu/housing/files/03088-1415paymentshalls.pdf
If you are from out of the county, you need to contact the financial aid office immediately and find out what your options are. Your housing costs exceed what has been offered to you. You will be paying over $10K per year in housing which it doesn’t sound like you have it.

You need to contact the housing office. You can’t afford to live on campus. You can find something cheaper off campus but you will need to have at least one roommate and you need to pay for your own groceries and utilities.
If you live in San Diego, north of the 56, you (new freshman) are required to live on campus.

Additionally, if you are a San Diego county resident, if your school is north of the 56 highway, as a condition of acceptance, you agreed to live on campus and pay housing costs.

Where are you parents? Why aren’t they helping you figure this out? You have to share this information with your parents.

Most student s are so excited to get into this beautiful and impacted campus that they don’t read the conditions required of acceptance.
