Hi everyone =) I have Four Quick Questions about Cal Grant B:

I'm in freshman standing and will be transferring from a CSU to a Community College (SMC) and I was awarded and accepted the Cal Grant B and got the first disbursement for fall semester (As I needed it) and I was wondering when I start spring semester at SMC will I be able to reserve it, So I can use it at a four year university when I transfer? Note* I will not be going to CSU and SMC at once.

Will I even be able to reserve it since I already used one semester or will the transfer rule rule me out?

[url=http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=106]California Student Aid Commission - Cal Grant B */url "In addition, students can not have received a Cal Grant within a year of graduating from high school." - Scared me :( Does this apply to me when I transfer, or will I still be able entitle to the remaining years of my Cal Grant?

When will it run out since I already used one semester worth of it?

Whoops, misread your post. So deleted my other one and am rewriting this.

Your situation is one I have no personal experience with. I applied and received my Cal Grant when I transferred from my CCCs to my UC.

You should be able to reserve it. I know that Cal Grant can be put on hold while taking a leave of absence and since Cal Grant does not give tuition/fee support for CCCs, it only makes sense this would apply in your situation as well. However, as I said, I have no experience with this exact issue.

You should still be able to receive the access portion if you need it, but this can drain your remaining eligibility time past even what should be your junior year. Cal Grant B will still disburse this even at a CCC. Cal Grant A is auto put in reserve for those going to a CCC because Cal Grant A only gives tuition/fee support and, as mentioned, this does not apply to CCCs. This would be something to call CSAC about. I know for sure there is a place to request the award be placed on hold due to a leave of absence from a 4-year, it would make sense that there should be something similar for people in your situation.

Anywho, like I said: no personal experience with this exact scenario at all. I highly recommend contacting CSAC.

Also, that part you read about “within one year of graduating high school” is only one of the possible times to be eligible to apply. Another one is at the time of transfer to an eligible California institution from a CCC. However, you’ve already been awarded so this is a moot point.

Hey, I think I am in a similar situation. I am attending a CC right now and I have received Cal Grant B since last quarter (this quarter not yet though). So I have been worried about this too. I don’t want to lose my Cal Grant when I transfer. That would suck lol.

Hello
I would be thankful if someone could answer my question.

I am qualified for the cal grant B.
I am sure I will transfer to a CSU.
Should I receive my cal grant for 2 years and then put it on hold afterwards just in case I cannot clear all my classes within those 2 years?
or should I put it on hold now? (but then I will only recieve 2 years worth of cal grant after I transfer, no?)
