Cal Grant: Merit Or Need?

thx

bob

Need........

Why do they ask for GPA Verification?

California Student Aid Commission - Cal Grant GPA Forms

How does your EFC come into play?

thx

There is a GPA requirement but it is quite low. A 3 for A and a 2 for B.

I see income but nothing about assets?

thx

bob

edit: assets for student but what about parents?

Cal Grants are money you don’t have to repay and are based on financial need.

Our EFC is around 8K. Will we qualify?

thx

bob

The Cal Grant doesn't use the EFC directly. They have their own income and asset table. (The asset number is for family assets.)

here is the table for the upcoming school year.

I hope the OP buried those assets well...

Are those values for your AGI or just how much overall? Also, if you are attending a private school in a different state are you still eligiable for it?

sue,

I guess I'm not in good shape?:

family of 3, 45K income, $100K in non-IRA assets. (house equity not included)

thx

bob

100K in assets basically disqualifies you from Calgrant if I am reading that chart correctly.

I assume your AGI was under 50K and therefore your assets weren't assessed by fafsa, schools that use profile can assess your cash and equity however they want to. There is no set formula

sue,

AGI is under 50K but I have a small biz and did claim assets on the FAFSA

bob

the link above says Dependent students** $61,700 as the asset ceiling.
I do not know how that is supposed to be calculated.</p>

I wonder if they just use what was on your FAFSA for determining income and assets. That would make sense. California Student Aid Commission - Application Process

Apply, see what happens

Machiavelli12, Cal Grants are for California residents attending California schools (public and private). The Cal Grant A covers system-wide fees at CSUs and UCs, and is currently worth $9,708 at California private schools. Grants for School, College Grant, School Grants

My AGI is 85k for a family of 5 so I am like right there, but I know if it was unadjusted then we would be over. But I guess it doesnt even matter cause I am probably going out of state. Should I still apply? Just in case?

In response to #13 - on the FAFSA, business assets aren't counted, are they, as long as the business has fewer than 100 employees?

For the Cal Grant asset/income table, it would be worth clarifying their rules about business assets if subtracting those would bring your personal assets down below the $61,700 limit.
