Cal or UCLA, thread number 1000000...

Ok, decision time is near, and i still need help. I visited both the campuses, loved both, and can see myself easily enjoying either one for the next 4 years.

The most important advice ive been getting is to choose a college that feels right for you. Well, cal and ucla are similiar and many ways, an i feel i can "fit" into either one.

So, im asking students that went to either school, chose one over the other, or just made their choice what the pros and cons are for each school and why you chose that school.

(dont worry, i posted the same thread in both cal and ucla discussions)

thanks!

Go to Berkeley.

***? LOLOLOLOLOL!

wat's ur major?

Flip a coin. That's how I decided

Hmm, well I just chose UCLA over Cal, to many fellow CCer's surprise, and here's why:

I love Cal; been a fan my whole life, it's "in my blood." The campus is amazing, the people are great, and regardless of what many rival school's students say, the people AREN'T that bad looking, and a social life DOES exist. Like yourself, I felt perfectly comfortable at Cal.

Then, I visited UCLA. Though the atmospheres are totally different, they share many similar qualities and passionate student bodies. UCLA's campus was much different than Cal's, but beautiful nonetheless. I would like it to be a little bigger, with a few thousand less students, but it wasn't a big enough blemish to damage my impression of the school.

SO, how did I choose? It was hard. Really, really hard. I loved both schools. I felt an obligation to carry on a tradition at Cal, but at the same time I was given opportunities at UCLA (scholarship and honors program) that I felt would give me a more personalized experience than anywhere else I'd been admitted to (I was considering Michigan and Virginia as well). So, I sent in my deposit for UCLA, and as of right now, couldn't be happier.

Some people won't have those added benefits, so it may be harder. Some things to consider: do you like warm weather all the time, or a change from rain/sun, semester or quarter system, LA or SF, intellectual or more social environment (I will definitely miss the carillon bells at Cal, they're absolutely beautiful and a great tradition at the school), and athletics (UCLA has more "prestigious" and renowned athletics, but Cal students are virtually guaranteed entrance into all sporting events, tix are cheaper, and facilities are on-campus. Both schools have tremendous pride and great recent success, just depends on what you prefer).

So that's my decision, hope it helped, and GOOD LUCK! you won't regret either one, I guarantee it!

We're guaranteed entrance to all sporting events too. Except football and basketball of course...

the thing is, im undecided about my major. I want a college where i cant test the water and choose what fits me

Mr. spam: lol, that's what i meant by ALL SPORTING EVENTS! including those!! hehe but oh well, i just wanna win a nat'l championship in bb!

go with your gut! that's what i did and it worked out well.

Well, Cal isn't guaranteed to football, are they?

California Golden Bears - Tickets

Season tickets are also $20 more...

I'm not sure about student basketball tickets at Cal though, as you need to sign in.

If all is "except for one(or possibly two)" then you win. What a shame.

yeah, they are. and freshmen get in free to every game except the big game. :/

normally you can always get into bb games at cal. that's what being 9th in the pac-10 will get you :/...new coach=better times possibly though!

Correction: Big game and the UCLA game for freshman
Other students have to pay $97 for their season tickets

We pay $75 for the games here, which also includes the USC game(this year). Fun!

it doesn't matter where you go in an academic sense. both colleges are viewed as equals for most post-undergraduate fields (for finance you may have a marginal advantage from Cal, but not by much).

the student body at both schools are quite different. the campuses are very different. the cities are very different.

Mr. Spam: so I'm saving $$ by goin to UCLA woot woot!

I chose UCLA because I didn't want to have to fly home to see my family, and I was getting slightly better financial aid too. I don't really like the weather up north (too gloomy/cloudy) and I just didn't want to move to a different place again... been there, done that. So I guess I chose UCLA mostly because it was more convenient... even though Berkeley's EECS program totally owns UCLA's EE (as far as rankings are concerned).
Seriously though, college decisions are overrated. Go where you want to go and do your best. Whats your major btw? I would suggest going to Berkeley if you're looking into business/i-banking... careers where the prestige of your undergrad really matters. For everything else, the real world is too different than college anyway and your success depends on many other factors.
Biggest things to consider, in my opinion... location/weather, academic rigor, "feel", convenience, and "does it take you where you want to go?"

omg me 2!!! i'm having trouble. doing pre-med.. where should i go?

vc08 - exactly!

right... because there's like, a certain obvious best choice for pre-med -.-

if you're premed, well, ESP if you're premed or anything stressful, go where you will be happy. that's what will serve you best in the long run.

If you're undecided, go to Cal since all their fields are top notch so no matter what you decide to do, you'll get the best education! I would think UCLA is more for the definitely premed type....

We have too many pre-med students already. Don't come here. Go to Cal, and have you're dreams crushed. Then come back to tell us all about it.
