Cal Pol or Davis for business? Snowboarding?

Okay, first let me say that I know that Davis does not have a true ‘business program’, but I am admitted under managerial economics for davis and business administration at Cal Poly.
I am planning on getting an MBA in Healthcare administration down the road, and Ive heard that MBA programs prefer that students major in something OTHER than business as a bachelors program. Is this true? In that case, would I be better off at UC Davis? Or do Cal Poly students love the Business Administration program?

Im so conflicted I love both schools. I also LOVE snowboarding, and Davis is much closer to the slopes. Do Cal Poly students go snowboarding/skiing very often?

I also love that Cal Poly has awesome weather and an exciting night life, however it does not have a great recreational center and Ive heard the food isnt that good. The two schools are so equal other than that!

Any advice?

Please help! Thanks

The new Rec Center is supposed to complete next year.

Hey, I’m a 2nd year accounting concentration in the Orfalea College of Bus at Cal Poly, and I absolutely love it. I’m from a town about 15-20 min outside of Davis, so it was just way too close to home for me.

The great thing about Poly versus a UC is that we have relatively small classes taught by professors…our profs aren’t doing research, and when I go to office hours, I talk to them, and not TAs. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about the university’s “learn by doing” approach, but it’s true. I’m getting a lot of hands on experience and plenty of kids are getting great jobs. I have friends who are graduating and working for Apple (They recruit here directly!), the Big Four, Amgen, GoldmanSachs and smaller investment banks and accounting firms. Plus, you can easily minor in Econ…it’s not that may extra classes!

A lot of kids snowboard at China Peak on weekends.

Cal Poly has a quite good business program. A lot of companies/firms recruit from the business school and there are a lot of internships available for business students. They also have careers fairs and interviews on campus for business students as well as some other majors. I don’t know anything about Davis’ business program. But Zach Efron’s brother is a business major here lol. So if it’s good enough for him…jk. But even though I myself am not a business major, I know quite a few people who are and I’ve heard a lot of good things. Business majors are kind of known as partiers though, but every major has some sort of stereotype that usually not true. As far as snowboarding: we have ski club (which lost it’s affiliation with the school because excessive drinking and partying violations and stuff). But it is still very popular with students. They go on trips and I’m sure there is some actual snowboarding/skiing that goes on, but there also is A LOT of partying accompanying it. There is also poly escapes which is kind of like a club. They go on a lot of trips and do outdoorsy stuff. I don’t ski or snowboard, but there are places to go that aren’t too far away from here.

Which undergrad school you doesn’t really matter if you want to get your MBA. Work experience is the most important factor business schools look at when applying.

@PolyGirl12- China Peak is SOOOOOOO lame when you’re used to Heavenly and Squaw. Nothing can replace Tahoe. I will miss Tahoe more than I will miss my home, friends, and family combined. And I’m not exaggerating.
gmw, I feel your pain. It’s gonna hurt to leave the powdery peaks for the sandy beaches, but somehow, I think I’ll manage!

sorry, i don’t snowboard.

Thanks everyone for the input! Ill have to visit cal poly one more time… it was raining the last time I went! As for snowboarding I think I can live with the occasional long trip to mammoth as well :P

Maybe you can trade in that snowboard for a surfboard… you are only about 25 minutes away from Pismo Beach.

Typical weekend for my daughter since January is skiing on Saturday at China Peak and going to the beach/surfing on Sunday. And her grades are still good! She’s had no complaints about the skiing, and we’re from a state with some great areas. Can’t compare it to Tahoe, but just saying, there are Cal Poly kids enjoying the outdoors every day. No comment on the business departments. No data points.

I asked someone who knows both, my dad. Both are great schools. The managerial econ program at Davis is the bomb, nationally recognized. Earlier comments true about bigger classes at Davis and all that. However, if you are going to MBA school afterward, you’d probably not really need a true “business” undergrad. It really would not matter. What would matter is which school will put you in the best position to land a good job after undergrad because if you want to go to a top program, quality and depth of work experience after undergrad are EVERYTHING. He’s hired many ag/manag econ students from UCD, and also undergrad business majors from cal poly. Both produce high quality employees. So, guess what, you can’t go wrong! Tough call. I’d check out both and see which feels the most comfortable to you. I got into CP, and its a safety, but I know I’d be very happy there. Did not apply to Davis, but kinda wish I had so I had the choice

That’s true there is no “bad choice” here, my only concern is how difficult it is to get proper classes at cal poly! I’ve heard of many students having to “crash” courses and being unable to finish in 4 years. Decisions decisions decisions :)
