I’m thinking about applying to Cal Poly, and I;m wondering about the kind of students that get accepted. What are the people like who go there? I don’t really know much about this school but I really like what I’ve heard so far. Also, what kind of things are admissions looking for in applicants? Does everyone there do something with math or science/engineering? Thanks for the advice in advance!

One of the big things people tend to talk about concerning Cal Poly SLO is how “white” it is. Honestly, I didn’t even realize this until I moved to a bigger city and was around more people. And I’m not white. So you’ll probably hear from one person or another that it’s not diverse, but I don’t really think that’s true. There are a lot of different types of diversity, and quite honestly, in my opinion at least, basically the definition of diversity mainly off of race is pretty narrow.

As far as the kind of students that get accepted, it’s really all different types. The school has standards, not to say that everyone I’ve met has been exceptionally smart, but I have met quite a few very intelligent people. There are all different types of people who attend as well. The school isn’t huge on Greek life or athletics, but if you’re into those things, you’ll find others who are as well. People are usually very friendly and helpful. The town and the school have a close relationship which is nice too. I think admissions mainly looks at test scores, GPA, and what kinds of classes you took. Extracurriculars don’t count for much. Not everyone has something to do with STEM, but it is the school’s focus, in addition to being well known for ag, arch, and some areas of business (such as accounting). That being said, it’s not a bad place for liberal arts either. I graduated with a degree in a college of liberal arts major and I think it was unique experience to major in that type of degree at Cal Poly. Definitely helped expand my interests too. If you have any other questions, just ask.

I am thinking of applying to CAL POLY as well. Regarding test scores, mine are not the greatest; I got an overall 1640, but i got 640 in math, and I’m thinking about majoring in Business and Accounting. Should I retake the SAT to get my reading and writing scores higher or does it matter that much? My GPA is 4.1, and I took pretty rigorous courses throughout high school.

Scores are everything. The admission counselor told us no human never reads/sees your application, it is all numbers (also a very simple application). Yes, get those scores up, including math, 640 is certainly average at best there. Scores matter a lot, more since they give EC’s virtually no value. Many many kids with well over 4.0 weighted GPAs didn’t get in. And CP tends to run cyclical. Since they let in 700 too many this year, that will most likely mean they won’t accept as many next year. They have run this way for years.

Cal Poly’s plans are to increase overall enrollment (eventually) to about 24,000. They expect to grow 1 percent to 2 percent a year, adding the equivalent of about 200 full-time students a year.

Retake the SAT and get your scores up to improve your admission chances. Preliminary data for freshmen enrolling Fall 2013 in the Business school is average GPAs of 3.94 and SAT scores of 1303 (Cal Poly only considers Math and Reading scores).

Instead of retaking the SAT, you might consider taking the ACT, if there is time. The ACT is Cal Poly SLO’s preferred standardized test.
