Cal Poly San Luis Obispo diversity??

So I have read from multiple sources that the Caucasian population is around 60%, does Cal Poly really even care about diversity? Because I know some colleges like to have different groups make up their student body, is Cal Poly trying to pursue that kind of campus? I'm Hispanic and really considering this college! It wouldn't bother me because I live in a farming town full of rednecks anyways lol. Also, is there any advantage for being part of a minority group in the admittance for Cal Poly, or are they just "all about the numbers" meaning Standardized test scores and GPA. Thanks!

Cal Poly is dedicated to diversity and their numbers get better every year. We are a mixed race family and our son has had zero problems at the school. In fact, he has thrived getting great grades and is now captain of an engineering team that competes in international competitions. He has had roommates from families that immigrated to the US from Vietnam, China, Taiwan, the Philippines and redneck towns like you describe. His team consists of Whites, Asians, Hispanics and an African American. The only truly underrepresented group on campus are African Americans. I do not know why that is and I wont try to speculate, but I am sure it is not because of school policy. You’ll fit in just fine. If my kid did you will too. Being part of a minority group is less important than your grades and test scores. However, if you are the first generation in your family to go to college or have other challenges that will give you a boost. Good luck!

Diversity in general would reflect balance in all four major races as classified in the US. That being said Cal poly passes on all but one, the African American population. If your idea of diversity is a balance of all 4 as most most student who prefer diverse campus setting want, then Cal poly would have failed the test. However, if you are only concerned about the Hispanic population , then you should not have a problem there, since the campus have a healthy Hispanic population (about 14%) on campus as-well.

@osakadad great news! I got in :slight_smile:

Congrats @Jakereally :smile:

I am a minority student too. I’ll admit the campus isn’t too diverse, but as OsakaDad mentioned, the atmosphere is very welcoming!

Enjoy your time! Feel free to message me if you need anything.

@r77r77‌ thanks! Do you go to the school? :o

@Jakereally Yes I do! I’m a second year engineering student. Do you have any other questions about the school or academics?
