Since CPP admits by major, if spots open up for Architecture they will start accepting off the waitlist. Usually this does not happen until after the May 1 SIR date but it can be earlier.
Hopefully your student will have other options.

“Waitlist info for 2021:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 9829
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 978”
Woah. I didn’t realize it was only 10% that get off the waitlist!
DS “denied” with interesting wording for the psychology major: “… more than we can admit. Therefore we are unable to accommodate your admission to CPP.”
A very gentle rejection
The # waitlisted and the # admitted varies from year to year. You can find the information on the common dataset section C2.
Edited: Also the data listed for the waitlist does not indicate the # of students that accepted the waitlist so usually a smaller than which qualified.
My son’s portal also says provisional admission but no email.
D22
Denied
Portal 3/7
Email received 3/8
What is the email similar to what my son received?:
“… more than we can admit. Therefore we are unable to accommodate your admission to CPP.” With a note stating they were forwarding his application to other Cal State schools for consideration — ?
Thank you
Exactly worded with her major inserted.

S OOS got in CS program just today. UW GPA 3.77 W GPA 4.2
Hang in there, hope you have other good news.
Do you know by any chance if the appeal to waitlist is the same “appeal” button in their website as for denied aplicants? or just simple letter to admission office will be sufficient enough for waitlist appeals? (I know that in their instructions it says do not send any letters, but I am simply not familiar with actual procedures) If you can explain please…
My DS got Application Redirected message on admission status. Where is it being redirected to?
Email came yesterday to his “promotions” folder in gmail. Not his main inbox.
I cannot tell you for sure about the appeal button, but since it is present on your portal, then I would think it is valid for your waitlist appeal. You might want to check with admissions to confirm.
Students may appeal their admissions decision made by the Office of Admissions once per academic term and must be submitted within 15 calendar days from their notification date of their admission decision. For an appeal to have merit, it must contain new, serious and compelling information that was not initially presented in the application.

Applications who have been accepted to at least one CSU campus will not be redirected.
Redirection occurs after all campuses report their admission decisions for a given semester to Cal State Apply. For fall admission, this will be after April 5th.
Eligible applicants who have not been admitted to any CSU campus(es) to which they applied because of a lack of capacity are then identified. Each student will then be contacted by email; the email will include instructions. When you receive the email, you will need to go to Cal State Apply and in the Supporting Information section under Redirection select a first- and a second-choice campus. Available alternate campuses are based on campus capacity.
After you have identified a first- and a second-choice campus, your application to the CSU will be redirected to your first-choice campus unless that campus has run out of capacity. To ensure your application is redirected to your first-choice campus, respond to the email as quickly as possible.
You will be sent a notification by email confirming the redirection.
The campus you’ve been redirected to will appear in your Cal State Apply account on the “Check Status” page. You will next be contacted by the redirected campus about the next steps in the process. Read the FAQ to find answers to common questions.
In the past, some CSU campuses that have openings for redirection have been:
Chico
Humboldt
East Bay
Channel Islands
San Francisco
Sonoma
Dominguez Hills
FYI…the waitlist data I saw on the Common Data Set 2021-2022 looked substantially worse for freshman admission for Fall 2021:
Number offered waitlist: 3996
Number accepting waitlist: 1851
Number actually admitted from w/l: 152
Yes, last year few applicants were taken off the waitlist of many schools.
My son finally received an email on 3/8.
Congrats!!
My son was waitlisted for CS yesterday. I’m pretty surprised.
UW: 3.8
W: 4.2
6 AP courses (including CS-3)
In-state and local
I know CS is an impacted major, but I was hoping his performance and the fact that we’re local would get him into the program. His friend, with almost identical stats, was accepted. My kid also has a lot of leadership and community service that his friend does not have (not CS-related so maybe it doesn’t matter).
At this point, he doesn’t know if it’s even worthwhile to apply to the waitlist or if he should just go with another school. CPP was his second choice, but his first is UCSD (no decisions yet). If CPP is waitlisting him, I feel pretty sure he won’t get into UCSD where the major is capped.
