david12345-
First of all, “cal poly” is part of the name because it used to be part of the cal poly SLO campus and even though it isn’t anymore, it still is a polytechnic school in california, hence “cal poly”. Next, I don’t see what difference you going to cal poly SLO makes, regarding the name of the campus, and how it compares. Your last sentence is the most ignorant, what exactly do you mean by it? Surely if you’re so academically elevated to get in to cal poly SLO, you’d know that it’s only worthwhile to compare specific collages of the campuses, such as engineering. For example, the engineering college at cal poly pomona is at a much higher level than the one at long beach. The same can’t be said for some other majors, and is why it’s best not to compare the campuses in general like you just did.

david12345 - Cal Poly Pomona is an excellent school that is listed as the 11th highest ranked Engineering College in the United States and the 5th highest ranked Public Engineering College (whose highest degree is a master’s) in the nation by US News. It is one of only seven Polytechnic Universities in the country. My son was accepted to both Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Pomona and it has been a difficult choice between the two. We live near Pomona and it is a fact that stellar companies such as JPL, So Cal Edison and Raytheon, to name a few, recruit there every year. We are proud that such a school is located in our backyard. We know several students that chose Cal Poly Pomona over the engineering programs at UCLA and other UC’s. We will also choose a Cal Poly education over a UC as we believe the Polytechnic teaching method is superior to the theory and research based programs at the UC’s. It is a gut wrenching decision to choose between the two schools. Because both are worthy of respect.

@david12345,

you just keep getting pummeled every time you post your ignorant comments on this board. Please name me any two universities in the country that share as much history and philosophy as the two Cal Polys which both offer unique majors such as:

food science
animal science
Veterinary science
horticulture
aerospace engineering
industrial engineering
manufacturing engineering
architecture
landscape architecture
urban planning

on top of all the other more common majors such as mechanical and civil engineering. The have basically the same breakdown in colleges including colleges of:

Agriculture
Engineering
Environmental Design
Science
Liberal Arts
Business.

The only difference being that Pomona has a college of education and hospitality. I chose Pomona over SLO for architecture for their more experienced and published faculty and focus on sustainable architecture (please check out their Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies). I would much rather study architecture near a large metropolis like Los Angeles than in the middle of the California coast (thought as pretty as it is). We may not be as selective as SLO, but most of us (architecture majors) still had 4.0 gpas and at least a 1200/1600 on the SATs and could have easily gone to UCLA and UCSD but chose CPP for our passion for architecture.

Sure CSU Pomona, whatever you say…

…that certainly didn’t limit a guy named Tamer El Sayed from getting a Ph.D. at Caltech after getting his undergraduate from Cal Poly Pomona.

[Tamer M. El Sayed - CV](http://www.aero.caltech.edu/~tamer/tamerCV_web.html)

So whatever.

Nice link to Tamer M. El Sayed – very cool accomplishments.

Whatever, stick to your Cal Poly Pomona support club. It’s a commuter school for the San Gabriel Valley mostly and unlike Cal Poly SLO which gets students from all over. A commuter school like the other CSUs. 40,000 applicants vs 20,000 applicants says more people like Cal Poly SLO.

How did this turn into a cal poly slo vs cal poly pomona discussion? It seems like you’re pretty upset. Why don’t you take a deep breath, and realize nobody here cares what you have to say.

Contrary to what most of you think, most real students at Cal Poly SLO do NOT have sour grapes to those at Cal Poly Pomona. They are too busy studying, and are very chill.

Unfortunately, it’s the Cal Poly SLO administration under the controversial former president Baker that established an all-out war on Cal Poly Pomona for the sake of retaining the name, etc. You know really peanut-size brained people.

Don’t be like that David, when you go out and work (in the real world), you will not be good co-worker if you think you have some sort of entitlement and/or if you feel superior over others. :/

I’m not sure about that LOL. Every time I go up to SLO county with my Cal Poly Pomona gears, I always get noticed and approached either by a SLO student, alumni, or parent of a SLO student. “Cal Poly POMONA?!?!” or “Oh, You go to the OTHER Cal Poly,” “transfer, transfer!” etc. friendly banter and all, but everyone takes notice. Was up there this spring break and got called out in front of my tour group by the 2 tour guides at Hearst Castle, LOL.

Every time I go to SLO, I make sure to wear all my CPP gear from top to bottom and represent :).

I’m a late Fall '10 transfer admit and proud to be a Cal Poly POMONA Bronco.

The funny thing is that Cal Poly SLO gets bashed by people who favor the UC system with the same hollow arguments Mr. david12345 is using to bash Cal Poly Pomona. Everyone is like “Cal Poly SLO doesn’t offer Ph.Ds and doesn’t have significant research activity”, “it’s in the CSU system”, etc, etc. So, what if CPP is mostly commuter? It still offers housing for close to 4,000 students. You are bashing Cal Poly Pomona because you are suggesting that people who go there were smart enough to stay at home and commute to school rather than sending their money to a corrupt… yes you heard CORRUPT

So, yeah, Cal Poly Pomona is commuter, but at least it stays true to the “CAL” part of its name unlike other stupid universities who dream of being something they are not.

Chopeful: I have no idea all those problems exist lol, wow.

I have to say man, one of the great thing about Cal Poly Pomona is it’s very diverse. I can’t say the same for SLO, esp. in downtown SLO.

As I’ve mentioned in previous threads, CPP was the only university I’ve applied to in October 2009 for a Fall 2010 admittance. When I was informed I got denied in May, 2010 due to budget cuts, I was heart broken. Went to work full time near LAX, then was informed by admissions in late August that I am accepted (yes, last week of August 2010 - had to accept and go to the very last orientation of the year and scramble to add classes).

Still CPP is the best choice I’ve made and would happily make the same choice if given the option again. I commute from work to school M-Th, making me a statistic contributing to the “commuter” stigma of CPP. The greatest thing about CPP is its location, so many different places to go to if you have a car or don’t mind taking the bus/train. At SLO, great weather, clean town, but there’s only so many places to go. You can start with downtown SLO, then travel north to Morro Bay, Cayucos, Cambria… and then what? LOL, those small coastal towns only take a day to explore.

You can argue that it enriches the student life experience living on campus (i.e. Cal Poly SLO), but it gets boring and repetitive, especially in a slow town like SLO :).

@syntha7

Well most people don’t, and those who do turn a blind eye to the problems. Also, Cal Poly SLO has the famous convicted murderer Scott Peterson --you know, the guy who brutally murdered his pregnant wife on Christmas eve-- among its very prestigious alumni. Also, Cal Poly Pomona always get wrongfully labeled as dangerous because it’s in Pomona --albeit being in the upscale portion of the town near Philips Ranch-- nonetheless, it’s Cal Poly SLO that has had more disappearances (Kristin Smart), hazing deaths ([Police Investigate Cal Poly Student’s Death as Hazing Incident - The Paper Trail (usnews.com)](http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/paper-trail/2008/12/12/police-investigate-cal-poly-students-death-as-hazing-incident)), alcohol-realted deaths ([Cal Poly Investigating Student’s Off-Campus Death](http://calpolynews.calpoly.edu/news_releases/2008/December/death.html)), alcohol and drug usage and wild parties. Rather be known as a commuter campus than a drunken party-animal campus XD

Oh… not to mention the Halloween display the brilliant kids at SLO State erected using a noose, a Confederate flag and a sign degrading blacks, gays and hippies that makes the recent UCLA incident involving hate speech pale in comparison.

http://theprereq.com/a-noose-a-confederate-flag-and-sorry-cal-poly-students/

It that the sound of david1234’s butt stinging?

LOL man, I had no idea Peterson was a SLO alumni considering I’ve followed the case when it broke.

The one thing I like to see more at Cal Poly Pomona is school spirit. It’s pretty darn apparent up at Cal Poly SLO; they have this uniform pride that Cal Poly Pomona student seem to lack. I guess if you’re stuck in a remote town, getting involved with school activity is one form to keep busy and entertained. I think a football team at Pomona can make up for that, lol.

Campus life and the campus itself at Cal Poly Pomona is improving with the construction of the College of Business Administration complex and expansion of the Collins College of Hospitality. I can’t wait to see them completed! That and a 119,000 sqft recreation center that got the green light. Exciting times for new Broncos :)
