So… I truly believed I applied as an Engineer major at Cal Poly, but once I saw I was accepted and checked the Portal, it says I applied as an Earth Science(BS) major. I checked back at CSU Mentor and behold, it was marked as ES.

Now I need to change my major…and I was wondering if I should email them right now? or just wait until Sophomore year to change my major. I do realize it is difficult to change majors at SLO, especially to the Engineering field.

You may need to change your major ASAP, if you need to be an engineering major in order to sign up for the right classes next quarter.

Do you have to go to any advising in order to sign up for your classes?

I would either go to the engineering dept or student services or whatever they have at SLO and ask how I can change my major. Can the change be done online if you login to your portal or will you need a signature from the engineering dept??

That policy applies to matriculated students. The fall term isn’t even close to starting yet, so you may be able to change it before you enter. And you should absolutely try to do that.

Bear in mind since ES and Engineering are in different colleges, they’re going to reevaluate your application with the rest of the engineering applicant pool. No guarantees.

I’m pretty sure you won’t be allowed to change your major until you have completed at least one quarter at Cal Poly, and your first quarter you will be block scheduled by your department (ES). I would suggest making changes to your Fall schedule once open enrollment begins so that you are taking at least 2 GE’s that appear on both flowcharts (ES and your desired major). You will also have to meet the minimum progress requirement for ES which is probably one course in your major. Then, I would also try to get into the 1st major course on the flowchart for the major you really want (this may be difficult). If you can’t get into that, then choose another major or support course (probably Engineering calculus) for the desired engineering major.

If you can get the courses described above, then you will be taking 3 classes that count toward the desired major, which will help you not fall too far behind. You also will need to make good grades. Your chances for C of M are much better if your grades are strong.
An even better strategy would be to take Engineering Calculus or a Chemistry course that articulates to Cal Poly Engineering (check assist.org) this summer to get ahead of the game. Cal Poly wants everyone to fininsh in 4 years, so C of M to engineering is difficult unless you are caught up with or ahead of the flowchart.

My dd looked into changing majors late January. The admissions dept. told her all major changes for applicants needed to be done by Jan. 15. You’re probably best off changing after you start (and maybe your little mistake was your ticket in since engineering is probably the most difficult major to be accepted for.)

I’m a sophomore at Poly, and I changed my major. I knew the summer before I started here that I wanted to change. You just need to look up on COE’s website what their change of major requirements are, and take those classes. They’ll require a certain GPA in those classes. They’re going to make you think it’s impossible, but it’s not!

One of my students was just accepted as an engineering major. Would it be possible for her to transfer out of the College of Engineering at some point if she chooses not to pursue that field anymore? Are there transfers allowed out of that college into the College of Science & Math or the College of Liberal Arts? I’m having trouble navigating the website around this issue.
