Cal Poly SLO or UCSD?

My major is aerospace engineering and I am having a tough time deciding which school to attend. I am open to changing my major if I hate it, however; each has its reputable programs within engineering. Also, since slo doesnt offer PhDs it isnt ranked against the uc schools... so there isnt a way to compare them. If anyone knows of any factors i should add to my pro con list, they would be greatly appreciated.

cal poly & ucsd are both great schools... one thing to consider is how difficult it is to change majors @ Cal Poly... i would check into it!

Cal Poly is ranked 6th in engineering for schools that do not offer PhD programs

UCSD is ranked 13th or so in engineering for schools that do offer PhD programs

The rankings in engineering aren't that far apart...plus, UCSD ranks way higher than Cal Poly SLO in overall prestige

So in terms of prestige, I would DEFINITELY choose UCSD...I think it's easier for you change majors there too

i live in san luis and the surrounding areas are completeley different. so that should be a consideration

Because UCSD is a UC, there is a lot more funding. UCSD has one of the top amounts of funding for research among the UCs. The engineering school at UCSD is also a breathtaking view. My friend skipped out on UCD and UCSD computer engineering for Cal Poly. So far, he hates it a lot, but he manages. His parents saw how CP SLO is ranked high but neglected to notice the rankings were of schools who only have up to a master's degree. This made them force him to go to CP SLO =. Both are great schools, but I would strongly recommend UCSD. UCSD definitely has the advantage in prestige, competition, resources, and college life.

they can be compared using USNews peer assesment scores. CP has a 3.9 while UCSD is at a 3.7. That being said, UCSD would be hard to pass up.

I heard that Cal States help prepare you for your career right out of college whereas UC's are more research-oriented for students who go on to grad school. You might want to take that into consideration too.

Agreed. My teachers say UC = theoretical whereas CSUs are more hands-on. That's why it is usually better to go to CSUs if you plan to get credentials for teaching.
