Cal Poly SLO. Read if you are debating to go here.

Well, unlike a lot of people who say "my sister goes there" or "my mom goes there", i am currently a freshman at Cal Poly SLO. It is true that you have to declare a major while you apply. Depending on your work ethic, it may be difficult to switch majors - you need to maintain a 3.0 GPA during your freshman year to switch.

But that should not discourage you from coming here. I am a Mechanical Engineering major, and despite the sometimes heavy classload of math, science, and major courses, i am having an amazing time here. The brilliant thing about this school is that it seems to have a no-nosense style of teaching, which trains students like me to have an extremely practical yet innovative way of thinking.

Another extreme benifit of this school is the class size. Many people think that class size doesnt matter, but in actuality it does. Especially in engineering courses where hands on help is vital to learning, student to professor relations are crucial. Most of my classes have no more than 30-40 people in them. Many of my Engineering labs have 12-20, which is simply amazing considering that it is a state school.

I just went through this process last year, and i know how stressful it is. feel free to contact me with any questions... i will do my best to answer.

And if you want a party. Oh man... 2 words. Mardi Gras.

Do you live on campus? How many years do most students live on campus, and how hard is it to find off-campus housing? Is there a college community "feel", or is it more of a commuter campus? Thanks.

hey clarity! i'm gonna be a freshman in fall 2005 and i'm so excited!! i just finished my housing payments stuff and i'm gonna mail it soon. i don't know why, i've been like...dreaming about this college but unfortunately, they're all weird dreams because the people in my high school are all in it...ahhh...anyways, i chose materials engineering and i'm hoping i could handle this...if not, like u said, i can still change...i hope..ohh yea! for the housing stuff, i chose sierra madre for my first choice, and then santa lucia. any comments on those two dorms??

i heard a lot people are enjoying their life in SLO and i'm glad, i hope i'd be able to enjoy the same when i go there. did you go to the open house in april and those SAP thing? are they helpful at all? i'm planning to go...but that's like 2 months away, so i'll worry about it later.
