Cal Poly SLO Vs. McGill

Yeah So I’m having a hard time…I was hoping people might be able to add some pros and cons to each school to help me make a choice? I plan on majoring in Electrical Engineering so yeah…here are my reasonings for now:

Cal Poly:
Great Engineering Program. $17000 total fee since I’m a CA resident. It’s in CA. Closer to home. Pretty close to LA, which is awesome. Cuz I kind of also wanna do film cuz it’s like my dream so I wanna stay in the area. Heard theres a lot of hands on teaching which I prefer to sitting in class. Also heard there’s a lot of great parties and hot girls so I guess that’s a plus…xD

McGill:
I’m originally and still am a canadian citizen. So it’s like $8000 total fee for me. I don’t know much about it’s engineering program but I know the school is arguably #1 in canada and #17 in the world. Don’t know much else about it. Worried I won’t be able to come back to the US and work and stuff.

Yeah…help?? ^.^

From someone who has no dog in this fight, McGill seems like a pretty easy choice. I can honestly only think of two reasons that Cal Poly would be better:

 1. Weather
 2. Easier grading

I’m in pretty much the same situation! I think I’m leaning towards McGill at the moment. And no, you will have no problems getting a US job with a McGill degree. I wouldn’t worry about that…they’re both great schools! Just figure out where you’d rather spend 4 years

If I were you…I’d choose Cal Poly.

 1. You stated you prefer the hands on teaching
 2. closer to home - you are only saving $9000, but think of the expense flying home to visit
 3. CP is closer to the silicon valley and hollywood if you want to do something in film

Don’t worry about the rankings. Read the engineering major forum all about that. Go to the school that you feel you’ll fit in, and make the most of your time there.
