Cal Poly SLO vs. University of San Diego

I've been accepted to both colleges, and I don't know where to go!!!! SLO is obviously A LOT cheaper than USD. USD is a small school, while SLO is a bigger school. They're both in nice areas. Where do you think I should go? Which school has a better reputation?

What is your major?

Are your parents fine with USD’s costs?

My major is Communications. My parents can’t really afford USD right now, which means loans for them and student loans for me. They think SLO is great because it’s literally $30,000 cheaper than USD! They want to wait to see if I receive any scholarships, but either way I’m not gonna get enough scholarships to pay for USD’s tuition.

USD has an amazing campus, but I haven’t visited SLO yet. From what I hear, SLO is amazing and everyone loves it. I’m kinda leaning more towards SLO now because of the price and location.

I think you’ll like SLO’s campus and it’s likely that SLO will be the affordable choice. Didn’t USD send out their merit scholarships a couple of months ago? My nephew got his in Dec.

Yeah, I got $5,000. That’s like a drop in the bucket for USD. haha.

I vote SLO. It’s a solid state school and is cheaper.

One thing that is negative about SLO, though, are the budget cuts in California. I read somewhere that it could take 5 or 6 years to get a BA!

One of my nieces attends SLO…she’s having no trouble graduating on time.

As for ANY school…if you plan out your quarters (noting which classes are only offered in the fall, winter, or spring) and register ON TIME…and don’t drop classes…take a real full load…and are willing to be flexible with your schedule…you can graduate on time.

And…if you’re that concerned, take a summer class or two at a CC…one that you know that SLO will accept. That will give you more “breathing room” .

Also, are you ready to take real math and real Frosh Comp? Or do you need to take sub 100 classes? If so, take those over the summer. Needing to take sub 100 courses adds to the graduation time.

Will you have any APs? If so that will help.

Often it is the fault of the student, not the school, when a student can’t graduate on time. Students drop classes, take less than a full load, change majors, refuse to take an 8am class, etc…these all delay graduation.

Ok that makes sense when you put it that way. Yeah, I have APs and 1 CC class, so I think I’ll be okay. Thank you!

Need some serious help here -

MY D has acceptances from UCSD (Revelle - Econ), USD (20k/y), SLO, Chapman ($25K/yr), Pepperdine (no aid yet ?), Santa Clara (BTW - if there is another thread or forum to post the discussion of how to make the decision between the schools above - please lmk)

Any idea/pointers as to how to help her make a decision - we are planning to visit to check out the atmosphere

Key questions are

Brand recognition for the above schools esp USD/UCSD/SLO/Chapman as it pertains to business ?

How well is Chapman known for their business program ?

My D likes a small school atmosphere - and she is thinking she may get the advantages of a big school (brand, exposure etc) with a small school feel with the Revelle college atmosphere at UCSD - is that true ?

She is inclined to go for an MBA later on - which school is better or worse for the same

It seems like all schools have a good international/study abroad program - any thoughts there ?

Is $20K/year the max for non need based at USD ?

Thoughts ?

SLO is cheaper and a better school and don’t believe the hype about budget cuts - SLO and Pomona, SDSU and Long Beach State will be the last CSU’s cut.

UCSD is by far the best academic option. Personally, I would opt for UCSD unless it is cost prohibitive.

UCSD would likely be the best choice.

Wasn’t the OP referring to USD, not UCSD?

It is confusing when another person interrupts the original poster’s thread with a separate question. hesalive should make their own separate thread for discussion of those school choices.

OP - you are good to go at SLO. Great area to live in. Yes USD has a great campus, one of the prettiest in the US, but you can’t make a decision on that. Cal Poly SLO has better name recognition in the state and the school has a solid reputation quite elevated from the other Cal States. You don’t need to spend the extra money to get a great education.

Slo to the OP

UCSD to SISTOKID
