I applied for Cal Poly SLO as a Biochemistry major. I just checked my admission portal and saw that I was waitlisted. Slightly surprised by this since it seems a little too early to even have a waitlist. I would assume that a waitlist would be created after the first couple rounds of acceptances/rejections in March. I’m wondering if this has anything to do with Early Applicants and their housing deadlines. Does anyone have any other ideas? Also, has this happened to anyone as well?
For additional academic information:
GPA: 4.5 (CSU Weighted), 4.0 (UW)
SAT: 1950, 1260 (No writing)
ACT: 28
Already accepted to: SDSU, UC Irvine, UCSB
From what I understand, the waitlist is created as soon as the admissions go out. Cal Poly and all other universities have a very good idea of how many students will accept their decisions. I believe Cal Poly is around 33% based on the other threads. From what people are saying over on the other thread, it is very rare that you will move from waitlist to accepted.
I copied this from a reply on that thread:
Waitlist numbers for 2013-2015
2015: Qualified for Waitlist: 1888 Admitted: 134
2014: Qualified for Waitlist: 1598 Admitted; 67
2013: Qualified for Waitlist: 1603 Admitted: 15
@flaminhaute it depends on the program, for engineering Irvine is trash (i’m a uci student). I would rather much go to SLO, engineering department is leagues ahead of irvine. Idk about SB though, I heard its a pretty good school.
Mechanical Engineering

Took Calc 3 and differential equations at a local community college
Took linear algebra through Stanford
Just looked at the portal today and got wait-listed, have yet to receive an email from them
@flaminhaute no I didn’t get regent. I checked my portal last week for Irvine and it said I was admitted. Also, I just received a packet in the mail. For SB, I got the invitation to attend the top applicant reception, which isn’t really a formal acceptance, but from what I’ve read from different threads, it’s basically a reception where they admit the students who received an invitation (present or not present at the reception) and then have a question panel.
I checked the portal last night and saw that I was wait-listed. I received an email at 9:01 pm tonight and the link to the survey looks broken! Agreed @ajgoody@nickstud650@awkwardmammal. We should call the admissions office tomorrow and see what they say. We can’t lose a spot within a five-day time frame since the survey is not even working.
As everyone else has posted, I too have received an email regarding the waitlist status, but the link is broken. I’m going to call admissions office tomorrow morning. Hopefully they fix this seeing that it expires in 5 days.
On a good note: I just received a letter in the mail from UCI saying that I’ve been selected for the Campuswide Honors Program (CHP).
Is every still waiting until May/July for their decision? I got accepted to Cal Poly Pomona and will most likely go there but if CPSLO accepts me I’ll reconsider.
