Cal poly students

hey I’m wondering… i just went to the Cal Poly open house and really liked the school and major and everything. But, i’m not sure if i’ll fit in with the student body. I’m pretty casual, low-key, studious and not really into parties. I hear most of the students are party animals. Is there any pressure to party/drink or anything? Does everyone party? Are people generally accepting or judgemental? Im a little worried that I won’t feel comfortable there.

What major are you going into?

graphic communications

Naa, there are plenty of students here like that. I'm sure you will find your niche. I'm surprised you've heard of CP as such a party school. Usually people see it as a mix of study/party. BTW, cal poly graphic comm. has an excellent reputation. One of my friends came all the way from maryland to attend. Congrats!

i heard cal poly wasn't that big of a party school.
i heard it was more of a cowboy school. that's why I'm going :)

sweet! i like what i'm hearing. sounds like i kinda heard wrong.
So students tend to be more down to earth than superficial i hope?

yes.

it's a small town. it's known for its very very very friendly people.

if you want superficial come live where i am in LA.

Yeah...I live in the LA area...I want to get away from all of this here. So i'm thinking this will be a nice change

If you want superficial go to a UC.

Rather than playing off it's school system for prestige and credit (AKA UC system plays off of the rep of berkeley, UCLA, etc) Poly has to FIGHT the stereotypes of the Cal State system - and they do it very well. They compete against top tier private schools like MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford, and win. People there are very chill because they know theyre there to achieve.

good. I would not be happy around a bunch of superficial people so thanks for the info everyone. The more I find out, the more excited i am to go to cal poly! I know that it is an amazing school (plus great location and teachers and classes...) I just want to feel comfortable with the student body. The more insight the better.

To say that CP doesnt have superficial people isn't really accurate. There are those deemed the "Poly Dollies" that are uber-superficial, but thats not really the norm. There are people that go to class in heels and make-up, others go in pajamas. In my science classes, for example, I've found very few of the superifical type girls. GE classes are a different story. If you are really interested in hanging with all down-to-earth girls, id look into UC santa cruz or berkeley.

well basically im looking for a variety of people. For example, i love that at my high school theres a huge mix of people... from preps to skaters to the typical brainiacs. I just want a student body where everyone can find a true group of friends with similar personalities. I'd imagine that at a big school like cal poly I'd find that

pretty simple..
one of my friends (freshman at slo) told me that everything was cool at slo. 0 peer pressure: if you wanna drink or smoke, thats cool. if not, thats cool too. you're not gonna be an outcast or anything.. you can still hang out at the parties and not get drunk or high.

additionally, im sure you'd be able to find a group of friends that fits your interests pretty easily. the ppl at slo are really really friendly and that should really help you out.

good luck with your decision!

yeah, I wondered the same thing at first myself BEFORE i went to visit the school. the open house changed me a lot having it go from a school that was a 2nd or 3rd choice to my 1st, because of the amazing variety of people and it seems like they aren't very fabricated.

there is obviously party everywhere, but yeah, you'll fit in no matter what your choice is i would sure hope so!! & i agree with the previous comment above me with the going to parties but don't need to take part in the other activities.

hope everyone is as excited to go as i am !

i'm so glad i found out all this. before, i was totally torn between cal poly and a uc but now im getting super excited to go to cal poly for sure! Yay! thanks for your thoughts people!

haha.. glad you chose SLO. its a really good school. whats your major hsgirl?

graphic communications. what about u?

FACEBOOOOOOOOK....Anyone sign up yet....I did :)

how the hell did u get a facebook off slo?
they gave you your emails?

actually with cal poly you can put teh email address that you log onto your 'my cal poly' account with. & weirdly enough that email "whatever@calpoly.edu" that you use for your account seems to foward the emails sent there to your own personal email account.

i wanted to use it for facebook too & it worked and the stuff sent to my cal poly login email was fowarded to my email.
