My entire family went to Cal and most (particularly my father and uncles) are strongly opposed to me going to The Farm. I've yet to hear sufficient compelling evidence to convince me otherwise. Anyone got anything?

What’s your major?

If you got into Stanford…GO to Stanford and have no regrets.

We all know that “breaking the cycle” is more appealing than perceivably “slumming” at Cal. Not to say that Cal is way worse than Stanford, but the general consensus favors Stanford. It would also depend on your major, or what you are thinking about majoring in, but I think you already know you’re going to Stanford.

I’m going to major in chemical engineering. I will most likely go to Stanford considering that Cal is wayyyy more expensive for me. I was just wanting to see if anyone had a convincing/amusing argument against stanford.

Well let’s be real…their mascot is just deplorable.

Stanford is cheaper for you? Uhh, go to Stanford and be happy.

Stanford is absolutely a better school. Berkeley is more fun as a college town, but please!

for some weird reason, Stanford does not appeal to me.
and that’s coming from someone whose both parents attended Stanford.
this is not to say Berkeley is superior to Stanford though.

both are top ten ChE schools, with Berkeley ranked slighty higher.

Stanford will have the smaller classes with the lower student/teacher ratio.

Stanford is located in a nicer area.

The two major lacks at 'Furd are mascot and hobos. They have pathetic hobos and very limited pools of criminals. Hardly likely to find the flushing mechanisms stolen from a campus building there, nor will you get the chance to speak with tree-sitting zealots.

As someone else replied - very good idea to wait until you know you are accepted by both before worrying about this. You would be surprised how much it changes your decision when only one gives you a yes.

Both are absolutely wonderful engineering schools. You should probably decide based on atmosphere, although there’s a strong pull away from here if it’s way more expensive. At a graduate admit day, a professor was mentioning that atmosphere is really important, and you’d think all they’d emphasize is faculty…but there does come a point when two schools may both have stellar faculty in the area of interest. You’re applying for undergrad, where certainly the particulars of faculty is less crucial, and both are appetizing, so atmosphere (if not just pure money) should be the deciding factor now.

go to Stanford. if you’re in. Unless it was more expensive.

Stanford!!! I mean there are pros and cons of every school. I grew up in a suburban town where the largest school I went to was about 300 and the student to teacher ratio was sooooo small that I felt like the teachers hovered around every single move I made. At Cal I feel like I would be put into what the real world would be like. A place where I’m not protected all the time. Of course, Stanford’s academics and nice campus are also great. It really is “to each his own”, we all have different requirements for our college, and you just have to choose the environment you want to be in for the next 4 year.

go to Stanford! I like Stanford and the people I meet from there, they’re usually attractive and quite intelligent. It’s one of my top choices for grad school.

You’ll definitely be MUCH happier there than at Cal. The administration is more accommodating and people are much more laid back and relaxed.

Also, we know you’ll choose Stanford and are just fishing for validation/compliments. Just don’t get too high off of it.

+1 Firapira

@Firapira: +1
@Leftist: Yeah, it’s hard to beat Cal in academics, but Stanford has Cal beat on nearly everything else. Quality of life is better at Stanford than it is at Cal.

@firapira: haha. I suppose you are right in that I will most likely choose Stanford but I posted this in the Berkeley section not looking for compliments but to find who I thought might be some hardcore Cal fans. I thought it might give me some funny things to say towards my uncles about UCB. The entire thread though has not quite yielded the info i was looking for as everyone seems to be evaluating this question seriously and objectively. I was looking for some fun answers.

depends on major. isn’t berkeley top in chem?

as for me, the engineering faculty here at Cal just blows me away, esp. in the civil & environmental engineering department. sometimes i have bad days when i regret coming here but those are passing. i just can’t wait until i’m done with these weeder lower division requisites and successfully transfer to the COE for CEE.

personally, i think the quality of life would be better at stanford even though i’ve never set foot there before. but it has to do with my personality and the atmosphere/environment i prefer. i know that my life would be much, much easier there (ie.: not having to worry too much about grades). but i wouldn’t say stanford is better than Cal. i actually think cal is better than stanford (maybe not so much for undergrad, overall, but for grad school, no contest).

uhm…come play with…the hobos? at people’s park?

Since when did college decisions become a joke? (Although I guess I ended up here because I tossed a damn coin…best out of 7.)
