Hi. I'm currently a first year transfer student. My dream school is obviously USC just like everyone else in the world, but I unfortunately don't have the grades to go there. I'm most likely going to go to Cal State Northridge or Cal Poly Pomona for the Music Industry major. Which do you guys think has a better Music Industry program?

I am also very interested in these two programs and would really like to hear which program is better. If anyone could give opinions it’d be great help!

Are those the only 2 Calif publics that you’re considering?

I have no idea whether CPP has a good program in the music industry. When I think of CPP, I think of engineering, not music…but I could be wrong.

I would think that the schools in or very near LA would be best.

Didn’t even know there was such a major as music industry.

You might want to check out the UCLA Extension Certificate in Music Business. This could complement any degree you get from CSU Northridge, Cal Poly or elsewhere.

https://www.uclaextension.edu/r/ProgramDetails.aspx?reg=CF552

I was thinking about UCLA’s certificate but I wasn’t sure if getting a music industry degree would be a better idea for when looking for a job.
Basically the only Cal States that have the Music Industry major is CPP, Cal State Sacremento, and Northridge.
I don’t really want to try for Sacremento because it’s not in a large music based city like the other two are.
I’ve been leaning more toward CPP because I know that Northridge doesn’t have a very good reputation and I will be up against people at the USC school for internships.
I mostly want to go to USC but if I don’t get in I want to make sure I have options.
Does anyone have any other tips?

I can’t answer your question in regards to academics, but I imagine CSUN’s location would be a benefit/plus for you in pursuing internships in LA.

Hello!! I’m also looking for this type of major!, by the way I heard that UCLA is going to officially open their Music Industry & Technology courses next year:
[Music Industry and Technology at UCLA](http://www.schoolofmusic.ucla.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=853:music-industry-and-technology-at-ucla&catid=44&Itemid=224)

but unfortunately since I didn’t do my Subject Test at all and I’m now way too late to do that -.- sigh…ah well, but there will always be alternatives.

Have you heard of Cal State Chico?, I found out about that site past yesterday and I found it really great due to the fact that they give out bachelor degrees on Music Technology, Music Industry, and Recording Arts. xD

check it out! (I’m applying for it!):

But just in case, can anyone please do tell which is better? ^_^

CSUN all the way!! Hello you’re going to end up working in Los Angeles/Hollywood and CSUN is the most popular CSU in LA. Also, CSUN has the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication which houses the Music majors. Mike Curb was very well known in the music industry back in the days…so the respect level is there. They just built this huge performing arts building that opens in January '11. Look at all the celebs that went to CSUN, none really went to CPP.

I have a lot of friends in the entertainment industry and I’ll tell you they came from the schools within the area…USC, UCLA, LMU, CSUN, Pepperdine, etc. CPP is just too far off the map.

Lastly, CSUN is the best CSU for connections/internships to the music industry in LA.

^ +1…

SelCrysti- I didn’t know Chico had it! Thank you for informing me! I would completely apply for UCLA but it’s so difficult to get into there and I don’t have like a 4.3 GPA like everyone does there! Haha!

What I’m unsure is CSUN is not considered a very good Cal State so I’m unsure if I want to go there as well as Chico. Also do you know if Chico has an internship? I can’t find any information on it!

Son is in Music Industry at CSUN and its an excellent program. His best friend is at USC and started in Music Industry there and has changed majors. The USC Music Industry program is mainly a business major and not much music.

We visited the Cal Poly music dept and met with the dept chair. She was very nice but it was a very small program.

MIS at CSUN is very well connected for internships and requires you to keep going in your performance education. You will have 2 years of school paid private lessons.

Also they do a senior group project that I think is unique to this program

3drummersathome - Thank you so much for your input! It really gave me a different perspective of the three schools!

Has your son at CSUN done an internship yet? I really want to go to a school where I can get into the best internships!

The one thing I always think about with CSUN and USC is won’t employers in the music business pick someone from USC more so than CSUN?

Thank you so much for your help!

He hasn’t done his internship yet. I see the newsletters from his dept chair and they seem to have some great connections for internships that they post as the new internships are getting ready to start. His field experience course this semester took them to see all areas of the business, Fox Studios recording session, music publishing, Remo factory, Recording Arts (Grammy), Island Def Jam records, etc. in addition to having many professionals in the business come in a speak.

He has loved it and seems to be making good connections. I don’t know how people would look at prospective employees from each school. I think the internship will be very important for connections. Does USC include an internship, I’m not sure? Maybe look at the course requirements for each school and see if the focus is what you are looking for. Son didn’t get accepted to USC so we didn’t have to make that choice - plus even with fin aid USC would be a huge stretch for us.

Another friend is doing a similar program at Univ of the Pacific and I’ve heard CSU Monterey Bay has a Music Industry program. Son definitely wanted to be close to LA so those were out. My husband has a certificate from Musician’s Institute and we toured there. Son was very interested but it’s quite expensive, no housing, and all GE’s are done at the LA Comm College.

So far, things have been great at CSUN. With the new dorms, new performing arts center and soon a new rec center, it just keeps getting better. They also have one of the best CTVA programs so he has taking electives in Music and Film. He enjoys seeing the movies and TV shows that are filmed at the campus too.

I am currently a freshman CSU Chico and I have just changed my major to Music Industry and Technology with an option in music industry. “The Music Industry Program is one of the countrys five largest and is the biggest in the West.” [BA in Music Industry and Technology - Option in Music Industry - Music - CSU, Chico](http://www.csuchico.edu/mus/programs/undergraduate/ba_industry_tech_music_industry.shtml)
Along with offering and amazing program Chico is a great place to live. You go to college not only for an education but for the “College experience.” Chico is a lot like east coast schools not only in the way it looks but also in the campus “vibe.” I think like only 5% of the student population is commuters and the rest live on or around campus. The whole town is for the college and you really get that feeling that your in college. you will not get that at CSU Northridge. I lived 30 mins away from that school and have friends that go there…lets just say they’re transferring as quickly as possible… lol
Check Chico out and I bet you’ll fall in love.
Good Luck!
P.S. Rush a Fraternity or Sorority…it’ll be the best decision ever
Go Wildcats!
