Cal Student Store

I was wondering how much stuff the Student store had. I need to get an Ethernet Cable, and basic school supplies, and was wondering if the store has all that. I was there on CalSo, but never really looked at anything besides clothing.

Thanks

you could get an ethernet cable at circuit city for 16 dollars. That's the cheapest and I bought one two days ago. I tend to think things at cal store are a bit more expensive then at regular retail stores, is that true upperclassmen?

sorry, but why do we need this?

Yeah, they do tend to be a bit more expensive, but some things are good prices. But last year they had a sale during welcome week. They have a big selection. You usually can find everything you need for classes. The products that have Cal or Berkeley logos are more expensive.

They have all sorts of things, from school supplies and textbooks to trinkets. They have a lot of clothing and books.

The store is conveniently located and while I haven't looked too closely at the prices they seem fairly average. Some money does go back to campus. Regents and chancellors scholars get some sort of discount there.

Alumni Scholars get 10 or 20% off, i cant remember the exact discount

alumni scholars get 20% off gifts and clothing. not so much school supplies though :/

the store is average priced, like say a drugstore, but if you're bargain hunting you'd be better off at office depot.

the ground level story sells men's and unisex clothing, the floor below that sells general books/women's clothing/gifts, and then the basement floor sells supplies and textbooks.

do we need ethernet cable?

If you want to get online in the dorms. You cant rely on wireless. So yes.

Yeah, get an ethernet cable. My friend didn't get one until spring semester and I don't know how she survived. It would take like 10 minutes to load her online bank account, not very convenient when you're trying to figure out if someone's using your missing debit card...

thank you, i was gonna rely on wireless :P

See hopeful219, thats why we need this. We just saved someone from relying on wireless at Cal

I had some friends who used wireless only, but they did have it cut out at times. They were in Unit 1. The campus is going to or may have already expanded the wireless further, but everyone should have a back-up handy, and in some buildings (such as those made out of concrete and steel only), reception for wireless is hard to find. Anyone can always put a wireless router in the room and use that form of wireless.

how long should our cable be for ethernet?

Berkeley recommends 25 ft.

For ethernet cables, make sure they are category 5. You can get a 25ft cable at Target for $10-$14 (depending on the Target and sale) as well as other locations, such as the usual Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry's, &tc.

And as much as I love the Cal Student Store, you can visit Staples (for example) to get your school supplies for much cheaper. Plus, free shipping at Staples. Of course, people have their different preferences.

Why category 5? (what are the categories?)

off the top of my head im guessing category 5 is just a different way of a more familiar way of saying it - cat5 cable lol

there's up to category 7 (i think). higher the category number, the faster it is. most common cables you purchase are category 3.

Ugh, $10 for an ethernet cable is a rip-off (though they're always overpriced it seems--if you get a bulk amount, it runs a penny a foot). Sorry, but if you can get to a real electronics store before coming, try to pick up a cheap one.

As for the categories, they simply specify the rated speeds and tolerances of the cable. Honestly, for the dorms any of the categories will do (even a 10Mbits/s connection would be fine, though you would be losing some bandwidth--I've gotten up to 30Mbits/s on those connections).
