Cal v. Pomona

Trying to decide between the two. If anyone has some good pros and cons of either place, please help me out :(

This is Pomona College BTW, not Cal Pomona...

Berkeley is more prestigious and cheaper if you're from California. Also I think Berkeley is in a better location (Bay Area, right next to SF) as opposed to Pomona which is kind of isolated.

Hm... price isn't a factor, it's actually slightly cheaper for me to got to Pomona (and I live in CA).

I want to go to grad school, and have been told 1. it's harder to go to berkeley's grad school from undergrad and 2. pomona is very well known to graduate programs. are both of these true?

What do you want to study in grad school?

I'm thinking of studying either Psychology or Cognitive Science.

Pomona is a real nice place to go to school. They will really give you white glove treatment, and since it's cheaper than Berkeley, that's really nice.

But if you are serious about cognitive science, Berkeley is the place to be. You are going to be limited in what you can do at Pomona. Berkeley is unlimited.

Thanks... hopefully my OHP/Cal day and my pomona weekend will help me decide :(

any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

you should be proud you have a choice between these two schools. i also applied ed1 for pomona college more than a year ago but was waitlisted and eventually rejected. if the deciding factor is grad school, honestly, i think pomona would be the better choice. i think pomona is 'more' unlimited. but of course, after graduating from any lac, you really need to go to a good grad school. a mere ba degree from a lac is not worth much

Since Berkeley is a huge public school and Pomona a small LAC, it would really depend on what kind of experience you are looking for. Both schools are extremely prestigious. I would suggest thinking about what you want out of a school and whether you would benefit from a more intimate environment.

By the way, I grew up right next to the Claremont colleges-- so if you have any specific questions about the surrounding area let me know. Part of the reason I came to Berkeley is to get away from the yuppy small town environment. But I'm sure you have your own personal tastes in regards to what kind of lifestyle you are looking for.

My S accepted by Pomona with $ but he will choose UCB.

As you mentioned 95% of the people think Pomona is Cal Pomona
and rest of your life, you will have to explain the difference.

"This is Pomona College BTW, not Cal Pomona..."

Lol... that's so true, cotodecasa.

The problem is... I love a lot of aspects of both schools. I really love the big game and all the sports at berkeley. however, I have heard that not many students are actually that into sports. also, i have reservations over the impersonality of berkeley... but at the same time i do like how many people are at cal, because of all the crazy clubs i've seen (like the socialist group... i'd join at a heartbeat.)

ok that's my diatribe for today

don't people love to skew the truth here. seeing as this is a UCB thread, I'm not surprised.

Unless you go to neighbourhoods that are close to Pomona, like Pomona (lol), Chino, La Verne etc - 90% of people in the US will not confuse Pomona with Cal Poly.

Name recognition may be annoying, but it terms of career prospects, it's far from limiting. Pomona is known by the people who matter - the academic field, the law firms, the banks, the education institutions, public policy, government. If you will take a look at our career development office, you can see the list of companies that are getting us to do internships. Many of these were forged by the contacts and the alumni network that Pomona is actually pretty good at. Definitely not as wide as UCB (I mean, your students number in the tens of thousands) but wide enough.

I'm sure you've heard enough of what an amazing school Pomona is from me, so I don't want to be pushy and repeat the same thing.

The thing is, if you post these kind of stuff in the Berkerley thread, you're going to get folks like CotoDeCasa who spew out all these unfounded beliefs in his focus on validating his son's choice. (Nothing wrong with his son's choice, it may very well be BETTER than if he chose Pomona, but it's about FIT).

You're seeking an undergraduate education, are you not? Pomona is overall not inferior to Berkerley in this respect. You're visiting, which is great. Just ask lots of questions, and you'll be better off. For cog science, I'd suggest emailing Professor Deborah Burke - she's really nice and is conducting pretty outstanding research on tip-of-the-tongue states as well as other research - she'll give you a lot of the answers you're looking for. Good luck.

This is not true. Ask around people around you.
Pomona is famous as feeding school for L-school, B-school etc.
and famous for grade inflation. (easy A's)

If you need name recognition and academic challenges go to UCB
want to get easy A's go to L-school. Go to Pomona or Stanford.

To me Claremonts colleges are like 1st rated prison.
You stuck there.

What's that supposed to mean?

I LOVED Pomona, but I got rejected. Like everyone has told you, you get both the big university feel and the small college feel. love it.

yeah, but around here in LA, everytime I say I applied to Pomona, they always think of calpoly. But no worries--if you have to explain to that person the difference between calpoly and pomona college, it probably doesnt matter anyways.

Go to Cal - you can hike up to the Big C again...and get your ass painted!
