CalArts acceptances

Yes, the site does seem to be down right now.

I called yes the whole site is down and yes they are still going thru the lists of applicants but, this year they are notifying by e-mail last year it was the mail way.

Deep breathes, I feel so horrible for you all…so frustrating!

Oh yeah, it sucks. I keep checking my e-mail every two hours. Well, I probably won’t get anything today. Maybe they’re sending out e-mails to people who auditioned off campus first?

I just hope I get the e-mail by the end of the week, otherwise I’ll go nuts!

I heard that they are sending out acceptances/rejections grouped according to who you auditioned with. Mary Lou, Nataki, or Raphael. i heard today of someone who auditioned with Mary Lou on campus and got her rejection over a week ago. The acceptance I had heard of was with Raphael. My S auditioned with Nataki. Don’t know if that timeline info is accurate, but is the RUMOR to date.

I auditioned with Nataki and shadowed her studio class and got her card. Well…we’ll see…

I thought my S auditioned with Mirjana

This is why this rejection (emailed Sat) smarts…CalArts was high on my S’s list but not at the top. However, after spending extensive time in the audition room with the auditor and receiving quite a huge sales job, this school sailed to the top. There was a long discussion about how my S worked, what type of environment would best suit my son (what is offered at CalArts, of course) the pros and many cons of the environments of all the other schools my S applied to and ending with a closure implying that none of his other schools could really offer the program that my S needed at this stage in his training. My S was sold, he knew CalArts was it after that and felt very positive about an acceptance (more so than after any other school’s audition process). The rejection is not what is bothering him but the “used car salesmen” approach that left him wondering “why?” and now having to re-imagine all the other schools’s programs that were mis-imagined during that audition. If a school is going to go out of their way, to down talk other competitive schools, live and in person during an audition, then make it worthwhile for the auditionee. What’s the point, otherwise? The good that came out of that audition is that my S now can state in less than 2 sentences what he wants to achieve from his acting training regardless of where he ends up. He knows what he wants, and with the help of all of his auditors, he knows he’s got what it takes. Moving onward.

AdaQuince sorry for your end result, who was your sons auditor?

So sorry AdaQuince. I can see how this would be upsetting, but also there is the possibility that they liked your son very much, but had to reject him due to the very low number of students they accept each year. I’m guessing your son was not the last boy to audition and sometimes they get surprised by other people in auditions to come.

Did he get the card and the breathing exercise? Did he audition on campus? (I’m just asking because now I’m pretty sure that, contrary to popular belief, these things end up not meaning anything).

I will feel exactly the same way your son did if it happens to me. They didn’t ‘down talk’ the other schools I was applying to, although my auditor did mention they were very different from CalArts. But I believe that they must have seen potential in your son and did not want to lose him to other schools, in case he got accepted.

Has anyone received an admissions decision that auditioned with Nataki?

momofdreamer: None that we are aware of
adaqunice: that is so interesting about his audition feeling like a sales job against the others schools. My S had the exact opposite reaction. He has always known that CalArts was different than other programs, but he said the auditioner spent a lot of time explaining to him how CalArts differed and he needed to make sure it was the program for him, etc, almost as if not selling the school to him at all, but the reverse. When my S told her he had already visited the campus, she was glad, because she knew that he had at least been there and seen the differences.
This is all such a crap shoot… for everyone… good luck to all!

Another day of no decision! Has anybody received a decision today?!?

AdaQuince, my son had a similar experience. CalArts was high on his list, but not his first choice. After speaking with the auditors, it’s become his “only” choice. I think that’s the danger of visiting schools and getting your heart set on programs. It’s a HUGE letdown when it doesn’t work out.

I’ve been accepted today! I can’t believe it!

Way to go Milky!!!

Awesome! So happy for you

Congrats! It’s a wonderful program and you sound perfect for them. D has a friend who just graduated. It’s a unique and amazing school.

When and how did you find out?

Thank you everyone! I just logged into my CalArts applicant account and there it was  “Congratulations, you have been accepted to CalArts!”
