CalArts Character Animation Chances?

How to start... Well, going into Animation is my dream, and like everyone, I know there is no better orgram than the one at CalArts. The problem is, I don't believe my artwork is nearly good enough to apply there, so instead, I just applied to other schools. I'm basically done with the Application process, but still undecided which college is my first choice (basically it jumps around from week to week. One week I would love to attend this college, the following week is another one.).

I always find myself going back to CalArt's website and rereading their Character Animation program, until today, I had an idea. I'm working a lot on art projects for school, but maybe as soon as I finish it, which will leave me with a lot of free time, instead of going to college, I could spend that year improving my artwork and prepare a brand new portfolio for CalArts.

I haven't talked to my parents about that yet, I don't know if they would be too happy about me not doing anything but work at a portfolio for about a year, but I think if I did that, I could certainly get into CalArts.

But that would mean that I would have to forget about the applications I already sent in.

So... Is it worth it? Should I do it? I really wish I could, but how do approach this idea to my parents?

Thanks, any help would be wonderful!

I live about ten minutes away from Cal Arts, and have myself inquired about their programs, as well as friends who have involved themselves in the school.

I will tell you straight out Cal Arts is one of the most selective schools in the country.

Not just for an art school, but a school in general. Their current student body is under 1000 I believe for undergraduate.

I’m a cynic at heart, but honestly I would say just to get into one school, no place is worth it to jeopardize all your other chances.

You may have an amazing portfolio by year’s end, but what if you don’t get accepted? Then a whole year wasted it would seem, for what seemed like a far shot anyways.

I mean not to be harsh like this, but my opinion is no, you shouldn’t risk it all just for one school.
