I searched this on the forums, but if I am repeating a question - I apologize!

I've taken IB math HL - which is offered no credit at Chicago. I signed up for the AP Calc BC test, but since I won't be studying much for that spec. - no guarantees that I'm getting a 5.

So, does the calc placement test at Chicago confer credit? For example, if I placed out of 151-152, could I receive credit for those quarters? (I'm planning on taking 153). Or would I just be placed into 153, w/ no credit received? The only reason I'm asking is b/c I'm planning on double majoring and it would be nice to take a few other electives!

My understanding is that you could get credit for 151-152 on completing 153. You would also have satisfied the core math requirement (I think whether or not you completed 153, but I’m not sure about that).

If you really want to take more electives, then you don’t need the credit. You need the credit if you want to graduate early and not take a bunch of electives.

Update - so I didn’t do too well on the AP test. When my adviser tells me what level to register for in the fall, will he/she consider the higher score (placement test v. AP score)? I logged into Chalk and filled out the biographical info today - and I had to answer if I took the AP Calc test and put it in my score - in all honesty I wish I didn’t take it so I could put n/a -__- Although, I’m sure it’ll matter less since I didn’t actually take the AP class. Thanks!

No worries on this one- they’ll default with your placement test, so if you do well enough on the placement test to place in to 153, a bad score on the AP test itself won’t be an issue. I know this was the case with the Bio test- I didn’t do as well as expected on my AP Bio exam, but rocked the bio placement test, and was still allowed in to the AP 5 Bio sequence (which I later didn’t take for scheduling reasons, but whatever, the point is made).

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you do, and did you end up preparing for it? I totally understand if you don’t want to tell, but I’m curious about how well the IB curriculum carries over to AP Calc.

do you kno if they transfer credit for calc classes taken at private colleges before matriculation because i will have taken calc1, 2, and 3 and differential equations before i graduate highschool and i want to kno if they will transfer.

yea thanks. i really hope they do cuz i’ll have completed 5 actual college classes before i go into college and it would suck for that to go to waste.

My recollection is that Chicago is pretty tough about transferring credit, esp. since their math sequences may not line up with what you’ve taken. OTOH, if you have taken several college math level courses, you should be able to do well on the calc placement exam and might get into 199 or one of the Analysis sequences. If you have done extensive proof work, that is MOST helpful and the most determinative factor re: your ultimate placement. And believe me, if you wind up taking 160s Honors Calc, it is nothing like AP!

The math department advisors are VERY accessible and will gladly work with student who have special placement issues. S1 (rising third year math major) has nothing but good things to say about them.
