I am in the midst of registering for my spring semester at the CC I am attending. The only dilemma I have is deciding between the route Calc (college algebra, Trig., Pre-Calc and Calc) or....just taking Stats and saving time. My question is which one would be more conducive in terms of the MCAT, med school adcomms and the overall med school curriculum???? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!!!! Please respond instead of just viewing, I could really use some advice!

You will need stats for the 2015 MCAT. Calc is required or “strongly recommended” as a pre-req at a number medical schools. You might want to look at what the required/recommended math courses are at your state medical schools and make sure you fulfill those requirements.

Almost every US medical school has 2 semesters of “college level math” as a requirement. Stats can be one semester, but you’ll still need a second semester. College algebra, trig and pre-calc are usually not considered “college level” math.

tl;dr you should plan on taking both calc 1 and stats

Stats are much more useful for pre-meds. Med. Research procedure are largely based on Stats. I do not know anything in regard to MCAT. etc. It depends on your overall math level. Are you strong math person? You will need to use non-Stats math in Gen. Chem and Physics, it is inevitable. But if you took at least one AP Calc in HS, that should be sufficient. For reference, D. took one AP Calc class in HS and one semester of college Stats (that was an easy A and one of the most useful college classes since she was interning in Med. Research Lsb for 3 years. She said that Stats had helped to understand Med Research procedures better). However, she also absolutely made sure that this is enough for Med. School application. She has contacted adcomms of couple of Med. Schools on her list. Asking here will not help, you need to ask specific Med. Schools. Each school requirements might be somewhat different from others. And in fact, they are changing. One of D’s school added to the requirements AFTER D. has applied and registered for first semester of her senior year. Keep in mind that this might happen. D. had to completely re-registered, she was walk in in some of her classes (hoping that she would have a spot) and drop one of her minors being only 2 classes short of completing. This is for the future, got to stay all ears and be very flexible and ask the RIGHT people, In this case the RIUGHT ones are your pre-med advisor and Med. School’s adcomms.
