So, my child's school, which is very small and selective, has only 'honors' courses, but no AP courses. (Kids do take some AP exams, but very few because they take actual university courses as juniors and seniors.) Given that, how do I make a guess at comparing GPA from this school which grades on the usual 4.0 schedule. The school also doesn't rank so I'm not sure how to make a stab at what colleges are safeties/reach/dream.
Now, the college counselors will do a lot of this for us, of course, but I'd like to get a bit of a head start.

ok so honnors are the same as AP, but without the test. basically, if you have an A in a honors/AP class, you get an extra point. Regular class=4 points; Honors/AP=5 pts.

For example: If your kid took like 5 regular and 1 AP, you would calculate it like this

A (54)
A (54)
A (54)
A (54)
A (54)
A (this one is honors) (55)

Add up each number, in this case, it should come up to 125. Divide this by the number of total credits (if your kid is taking 6 classes, total credits= 30; 7 classes=35 credits); Divide 125/30 (for this example) and you get a 4.1 GPA

Hope this helps
