Calculator for SAT Reasoning Test?

I've read that calculators don't matter for this test, as long as the basic scientific stuff is there, then I've read at places that TI-83 or TI-89 are good things to have because you get a huge advantage. Either way I am planning on righting in June and want to know what to buy. Thanks for the help everyone :).

Personally, I use a scientific calculator for the SAT because I don't think the graphing function is that useful. However, I do have a TI-84 with me during the test, just in case there's a problem that can be solved more easily when graphed.

Good luck in June!

I used a scientific calculator for both SATs and ACTs and got a 790 and 35 respectively on math so I don't think you need the graphing calculators.

It allows you to solve certain problems faster. So you don't spend all your time trying to do simple arithmetic or make a stupid calculation mistake. Graphing is also helpful..probably the best part about the TI-83/84/89. I have a TI-83+ and I love it..if you're going to take calculus you can consider a TI-89. I wouldn't buy an expensive TI-83 or 89 just for the SAT though

You don't really need one if you're really good at math...but it's certainly helpful!

If you are comfortable with graphing calculator, use that. If not, you don't have to. I used scientific calculator for both SAT I and II. I did fine.

You don't need any calculator, just use whatever you are most comfortable with.

I agree....your only as smart as your calculator. If you have an TI89 and have no idea how to use it/aren't familiar with it, don't use it.

Use what YOU are comfortable with. remember, all SAT questions can be solved without a calculator.

You can get 800 without any calculator, but it certainly helps. I use a graphing calculator just because I like to graph functions in the rare (or not so much) situation that my brain melts

You really, really do not need a graphing calculator just for the SATs, and in fact, I do practice problems without my calculator just in case I leave it at home on the day of the test. You will maybe see 5 questions that would be helpful with a calculator, and even then the calculations can be done on a scientific calculator.
