Calculator Permutation/Combination & Formulas for SAT/ACT Math

Hi guys,

Will just being able to use the nPr and cPr functions on my calculator be sufficient enough to solve permutation and combination on the SAT and ACT? I honestly suck at these types of statistics problems.

Also, which formulas(besides the usual, basic linear algebra ones) are useful to memorize or program for the ACT and SAT? As of now I have quadratic formula, distance formula, and interest programs on my calculator for my math classes.

Thanks!

Google Erikthered for a good formula guide

Yes, you can use the nPr and nCr commands, although it is best to practice more combinatorics problems, as you don’t want to evaluate 10P5 when you should’ve done 10C5, or vice versa.

Combinatoric questions on the SAT rarely rely on just being able to apply the formula. They like to test if you understand the difference between permutation and combination, these terms will never be used on an SAT question. It will be your job to differentiate between these two scenarios based on the context. And finally, many of the SAT problems can also be approached by just listing all the possible arrangements.

I would recommend you to not memorize or store the formulas without understanding them.
