Just curious because I need to buy a calculator for Calculus and I was wondering if they allow you to bring your own or they provide a calculator for you? If they allow you to bring your own, are there limitations? For example, I was going to purchase a TI-89.

If you are in Calculus 1 or 2, or in remedial math, they will issue you a cheap, nearly no-functions calculator. Except in Calc 3 or higher classes, they do not allow TI-89s anymore because of the earlier cheating scandal.

And if you get into Calc 3, its debatable whether you need a TI-83 or not, since you get a program called "MATLAB" on your computer that is extremely powerful, if you can learn how to use it. (you will also still get the cheap calculator)

Bottom line, you don't need one yet, and dont spend your money on one. However, if you get into Calc 3 and want to get a TI-83, then you can for sure.

I would buy a TI-83+. It is easier to use, more people know how to use them, and they are allowed on more tests.

At the Academy, it is mostly the "Honorlator" in lower classes or a program called CalcTool, which does much of what the 83+ can do. I still use my 83+ for homework, when I need to do stuff quickly.

I use my Ti-89 Titanium here. It doesn't add much of an edge, however I like its interface better and graphing is easier. But as the others have said, its not necessary, between the issued calculator and MATLAB, you will be fine.

What things did you bring with you to USAFA? Did you have your parents send you things after basic?

I had them send me things like my watch, my ring, personal items, pictures, gifts, memorabilia, and other things that I couldn't have during basic. Academically...the only thing I had sent was my TI-83.

Then there's always the care packages...:)

Thanks, I thought I read something about that before, but I couldn't find it again.
