@Drcne1 yes, business majors do usually take calculus, but it’s typically a watered down version over one or two semesters. Engineering majors will have to take years of physics and engineering classes that use calculus for virtually everything. If you have an aptitude for this and are passionate about it, go for it, but it’s not like you absolutely have to take lots of calculus for every major.
@HPuck35 maybe not on the job, but the coursework is impossible to get through without it.
It’s also important to remember that even if you don’t quite enjoy the math, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a very successful engineer after college. My mother is a mechanical engineer and she struggled with some of the math courses at A&M, but hasn’t used calculus or differential equations since she left college 35 years ago. She works in a management role and makes very good money doing it. Probably more money than most of the kids that aced all of those calculus courses.
I actually had the opposite problem that you are (were?) having with calculus. I really loved all of the calculus classes and wanted to switch my major to math and physics. When my mother told me she never uses calculus, I knew it was time to switch. I just graduated with a physics degree and going for a PhD. In your case, I think engineering might still be a great choice. Definitely stick with it!
I was in the same predicament as you. I dropped Calculus II over the summer and I was able to attain a research internship from my community college. I agree with you Calculus II was very over whelming to me and for that type of class I knew it would require me to put my summer vacation on the line and have a full focus on Calculus II. However I dropped it and now I will have to take in next semester in the Fall of 2015. But if you are willing to devote your summer to Calculus II I would say go for it and don’t let Failure be an option. I took General Chemistry over the summer of 2013 and I devoted my whole summer to the class and I passed it. What ever it is you do I wish you so much luck on your journey !
