So I read in the course catalog that placement tests for mathematics and calculus are administered during O-week, and allow one to place into higher-level classes based upon performance. So then despite what score was received on the AP exam, you can place into a very high-level course with a good score on the placement test?

Yes that is correct, although I heard that you can just basically argue your way into the classes you want. Placement exams provide you and your counselor with a more wholesome picture of your level of understanding in a particular subject.

Depends on how argumentative you are, and it will also depend on how close your placement results were to the class you want to take. You won’t get into Honors Analysis by testing into 161, although you might be able to argue yourself into 161 having tested into 131 or 151.

keep in mind that they test for a reason. Put another way, you don’t find many kids “trading up” to harder courses from what they place into. You find a lot trading back because the work is just too much.

Believe it or not, no one at UofC thinks “higher is better” so don’t think you have something to prove.
