Hey CCers.. Unfortunately I didn't get into any decent colleges and I don't have hopes from any colleges whatsoever who waitlisted me. StillI got some safeties which offered me full or near full tution aid but they are 2nd-3rd tier colleges like Caldwell and UNO. Also I heard there is a risk of visa denial for those who have a I20 above 10k. Is it true?

The thing is, my major will be Comp Science/engg or IT depending on the colleges and I doubt if the risk is worth taking. Paying 14-16k per year for a safety or going for a decent NIT and pursuing CSE without any financial stress. Please guys who have been in this situation help me choose a path.

P.S If there is anyone sure on attending Caldwell PM me...

I don’t think it’s worth paying so much for Caldwell/UNO. It’s a ton of money, plus you have living expenses and what not here, outside of Room/board. And yes, there’s a risk of visa denial. High paying jobs aren’t easy to come by, let alone jobs.

14K is the total I20 amount… And if I attend, I will be staying off campus after my 1st semester like many Nepalese do at Caldwell… They say it will reduce the living cost to half and remaining you can earn easily… These are the words of seniors… The thing is, I am sure it’ll be much easier getting in graduate program from US rather than any colleges from Nepal…and the opportunities I will get there will help me much more than staying in Nepal… I wanted to know how well is the degree from colleges like UNO, Howard, Caldwell, Ramapo regarded by graduate colleges?

The living cost would decrease only if you find roommates. Those schools – Howard, Caldwell – are what you make of them. If you want the name of those schools to help in graduate school admissions, then you’re out of luck (although Howard would definitely help if you want to get a PhD in African American History). It’s just the names of top LACs – Swarthmore, Reed, Grinnell, Macalester etc – and great LACs – Hobart & William Smith, Bennington – that can give you a push in grad school admissions. In any case, what you do in your undergraduate career will matter much much more. Therefore, you can accomplish great things here or India or wherever, and still get into top graduate school programs.

If you want to study engineering, it’s fine to go to UNO. Engineering curricula are usually standardized across all ABET-accredited institutions.

Thanks ilikemagic18, that was helpful… I will try getting into one of the top NITs… I heard bad things about UNO so I won’t attend…But will let the time decide… :)>- Thanks again…

UNO provides full tuition, room and board to the students who have a CR and Math composite score above 1340. They do it for a reason. They need quality students to really study and graduate. This must give a sense of academic environment here. It makes me sad to reveal that academic environment and quality is poor. So, if you are looking for a serious studies or a graduate school placement, UNO is NOT a place for you no matter what kind of scholarship you may have received, and I seriously mean it.Please do not come here if you are looking for serious, competitive or rigorous academics.

And a strong NO-NO for the students without full aid.
