<p>Just like many Nepalese students this year, I was an applicant with quite good stats and would qualify SAT and grade wise to prestigious American Colleges but maybe because of the competition or some loophole in my application or plain bad luck I got rejected or waitlisted to all the colleges I applied. So now, my life hangs in a balance. The thing is that my SAT and GPA will help me get into some okayish colleges with generous merit aids like UNO or St peters. But I'm not sure If I should be going there. The main question I am curious about is "Is it better to go abroad and study in such okayish colleges like UNO/St Peters or stay here in Nepal and go to Pulchowk or KU?" I'm talking about the whole aspect including the quality of education and the opportunities after graduation as well. Any type of help is appreciated.</p>

<p>I’m also getting totally confused. And people saying that engineering in Nepal isn’t taught nicely and there are more engineers in Nepal than required aren’t helping either. I’m in such a dilemma right now.</p>
<p>Engineering in Nepal is best if you study in Pulchok 
Some of the pulchokians have made a great progress and done renowned jobs. 
No matter whereever you are, all things that matters is your capability.</p>
<p>I’ve heard pulchowk is good. But the competition is really tough to get in. Hows KU btw? And when i think about applying here in Nepal, the saddest part is my SAT, SAT 2 and Toefl scores being wasted…
not to forget the gap year.</p>
<p>@Starrynight94 - the feeling couldn’t be more mutual my friend! Its so disheartening, man! I also took a gap year, did quite a few things that I am truly passionate about, but nada! But now, I am looking forward to attending a management college here in Nepal itself. It’d be great if we could share our stats!</p>
<p>I think sharing the stats right niw us quite pointless. Its been wasted after all. Still if you want to know i had 2140 in SAT, 2350 in SAT 2, transcripts full of A*, A and B. I also had tons of meaningful ECAs too, few were international too. I was hoping to get into atleast one good LAC of my choice. Now i really don’t know what i’ll be doing next. What were yours?</p>
<p>Friends the SATs really don’t matter much. All it matters is how good are you not how excellent your scores are. :)</p>
<p>I would attend UNO. UNO may not be a match college for us, but consider its prospect as well. It is a national,PUBLIC, and large university in a great location, engeneering program as good as engeenering some LACs offer and excellent aid. May be safties are the places to thrive…may be they can provide lot more opportunities than the colleges we have longed for can provide.
You should have a good solid reason to turn down that kind of offer!</p>
<p>I myself was in same situation 7 years ago. I choose to come US and get my bachelor done and I think it was the best decision I made. I will explain why:
- Although Pulchowk is the best college in Nepal and most probably best in south-east asia, universities in US doesn’t know about Pulchowk. If your intention is to do research in future and ultimately get PhD, getting good grades and good GRE score aren’t the only two things that are going to get you to good grad school. The most important part of the graduate school application in your research experience during undergraduate years, and your publications about your research. Good universities around the world look into this, and it is the ultimate factor for you to get to schools like MIT, Stanford etc. At Pulchowk you might be getting a high class education, but your research opportunity is zero. So you decide.
- If your intention is to just get to US, finish school and then get a job. I would recommend studying in Pulchowk, get your Master’s done here (basically you will study free in US for your Master’s degree in mediocre schools like UNO by getting GRA, GTA etc.) and then get a job. Bachelor’s degree is a bit hard in the sense you are required to work and study at the same time. If you do manage to get a scholarship for Bachelor’s degree, don’t waste the chance.</p>
<p>In short, if your plan is to just get a decent job and settle in US, or even return to Nepal after graduating, I recommend you to finish Bachelor’s degree in Nepal. If your plan is to get to good grad schools and do PhD ultimately, I say you come to US.</p>

<p>Yup I had quite thought the same thing. If I stay here in Nepal, I may get good grades and GRE scores but my ECA will be nil. And above that, what is the guarantee that every good student will get into Pulchowk, its another damn tough selection process. I think I’ve already had enough of rejections already… And thanks to all the replies, some really good insights I must say…:)</p>
<p>@Starrynight94-hello man! I find myself exactly in the same position.I think it’s better to get into some okayish college after the gap year we have already taken.But I really don’t know what kind of aid these colleges are going to give?</p>
<p>@pkrguy- I am also in same situation. I got into some safeties. But, didn’t get enough aid. The problem with these okaish colleges is that even if you get a place, aid is very low.</p>

<p>No, it is not.They have application deadline of August 1st. They may have a scholarship deadline though, but you can always fedx your application to remain safe. That is the best that can be done for now.</p>
