@sasseeb4 the 15k merit money means Clemson really wants her to attend and is in recogniztion of her great academic accomplishments.
Although disappointing to not get Calhoun remember she can apply for honors after first semester if Freshman year.

thank you, I told her that but she is a very competitive individual, she wants to go to the vet school and honors is where she wanted to be, interviewing for FMU and Presbyterian this week, full ride scholarships, ultimately her decision, disappointed but maybe she will change her mind after a few days
thank you, I tried to tell her that too, she’s disappointed, she has 2 other interviews this week for FMU & Presbyterian for full scholarships, ultimately her decision,
My daughter did not get in either. She has the $15K scholarship and looks better on paper than my son who was admitted to honors in 2016. I think it gets more and more competitive every year.
Mine too
sorry for your daughter, but great about the $, my daughter was offered a lot more at COC & Presb, but had her heart set on Clemson, feels like they downgraded her accomplishments, she hasn’t taken anything but honors, AP or DC her whole high school career
@sasseeb4 full ride is good…lol…
We went to visit the honors department over the summer and were told that you needed a 1380 SAT to even apply for the honors college however once you applied - then they did not pay too much attention to their scores but more on their recommendations and essays
yes, lol, she ultimately wanted clemsons program for pre-vet into UGA, until today but UGA accepted her as honors so its possibility as well, considering other areas of biology as well, she is headstrong and strongly believes she should not have to pay for it, she will carry 31 DC hours & 22 AP credits feels she has worked too hard to not get what she wants, we know absolutely nothing about Presby, but I guess its time to learn lol
Congratulations to all that got in! My son didn’t get in, OOS and received the 15,000/ year scholarship. Has been accepted to other honors colleges at great schools and also to their engineering honors programs at colleges. He is top ten which is top 1% of his graduating class. ACT=35, 4.0 unweighted GPA/4.75 weighted 12 AP classes, 2 dual enrollments and will have well over 30 college credit hours. Varsity athlete x 4 years- captain senior year, club year round sport x 8 year, was a governor’s school scholar for sciences and engineering (5 week program summer 2016), attended Clemson’s summer programs (2017), strong E.C’s and volunteer hours, active in church, plus was asked to be on a research project for STEM scholars that presents at a science convention in May. His essays were very strong and very original, but obviously not how they must have wanted the questions answers. I would like to see credentials of the people who read the essays. Wonder if they are all in the humanities field. I would hope they would include some engineers or business professors as well. Anyway, he was disappointed as Clemson was his top choice if he got into honors. He even spent time this summer while at Clemson talking to a Calhoun honors advisor. I guess he will talk to his school counselor and see if he should appeal. He’s been offered more money at other universities anyway that offer more research opportunities since in cities, but he loved the feel of Clemson’s campus.
@WDWFan those sure are impressive stats. I’d also be really curious to hear who was accepted! I wonder if the competition is a lot tougher for engineering since that is such a popular program. Clemson with Honors was my son’s top choice too, but without honors we are just not sure if it’s the best fit.
@WDWFan wow it is hard to believe he did not get in. Great stats great EC. Infathonable that someone with his qualifications would not get.
@WDWFan I have similar stats to your son’s: 1550 SAT, 4.0 UW, 1/125, 8 AP classes (my school doesn’t offer many), and taking Linear Algebra/Multivariable Calc at a college during senior year. I don’t know exactly what they look at, but I’m guessing service-based EC’s were weighted pretty heavily (I talked about volunteering at a special needs school as my brother has Down Syndrome).
@WDWFan Your son can call and find out what they would like to see in an appeal. It’s more than being about the best stats (your sons are so impressive!), it’s about a certain kind of student. The essays and letters of recommendation are the most important thing to them.
If he feels like that truly is the place for him, then he can appeal or he can also apply in the fall he gets there and be in for second semester. I would hate to see anyone who really wanted to be a Tiger turn down Clemson just because they didn’t get into honors for one semester.
Yes we were quite shocked he was denied. He has over 250 volunteer hours through key club, national honor society and at least 80 (he didn’t keep up with everything he did) through church volunteer opportunities. Yes we know it’s more than stats his essays were outstanding but obviously not what they wanted to hear. I thought his Clemson essays were his strongest, and he applied for several scholarships and honors colleges. His recommendations came from his teachers that are also advisors of clubs he is active In. So I’m sure they were great. I volunteer at the school frequently and they always have nice things to say about him. Just not sure Clemson is the right fit without honors. The first semester of college is when you need a support system especially an OOS which an honors program offers. I told him if he wanted to appeal he should call and find out what they wanted to see, not sure what else they would want other than trying to change the way he thinks.
If your son wants to attend Clemson, he should attend, Honors or not. RISE will give him that sense of community and support during his 1st year. He can apply for Honors in his first semester and, hopefully, get in for the 2nd semester. AND he should appeal. The Honors office will tell you what the issue was with his application and he can address that in his appeal.
Congrats to those that got into Calhoun. My son did not and is a bit disappointed but still wants to go to Clemson! He will re-apply in the spring. We just visited Calhoun and they highly recommended reapplying after 1st semester and said its easier to get in that way that now because there are fewer applicants. The biggest disappointment is not getting into Honors Dorm so my son is now deciding between Core A and RISE.
@adtuck my son too! My son will be applying for Core A still.
mweb136 - where are you from? we are from FL so my son will not know anyone there. RISE has appeal but he is a social kid that is studious and needs down time to recharge so Core is probably a better fit for him. He’s on the FB page now trying to connect so maybe our DS will meet.
My son was in Rise freshman year and found it to be social. He’s living off campus now as a sophomore with friends he met in Rise. Engineering advisors are in Rise as are study sessions and I believe he even had a class in the Rise bldg.
