My son has not received an admission decision from Clemson, yet. However, we just got an email from Calhoun Honors College stating that he has not been accepted into the honors program. The letter goes on to say that 15% of the honors students come from the general population after freshman year. It also says:

"It is my sincere wish that you will challenge yourself to become a member of the Calhoun Honors College early in your Clemson career."

Hmm I’m not sure, it does say “early in your clemson career” which may hint at a possible acceptance but you can never be too sure. If your stats are really good that you decided to apply to the honors college, I’m sure you can be pretty confident that he will be accepted. Best of luck as February 15th approaches!! I know everything with college can be very stressful as it certainly was for me last spring.

By the way, you can apply for the honors college after every semester as long as you have a 3.5 GPA.

My son’s test scores were good enough for Calhoun (2200 SAT and 33 ACT) so he thought why not apply, but his GPA was lacking (3.3u/w probably a 3.7w. I’m guessing top 15-20% in his class - his school doesn’t rank.) He has good EC’s and I’m sure good recommendations. As far as regular admission, since we’re out of state, his GPA is on the low side, and this is one of the largest graduating classes in high school history to be college-bound, we’re not too confident about anything.

The class rank was a major problem, they want students ranked in the top 5-10% of their high school class.

Don’t worry though, if you work hard first semester and get that 3.5 GPA, you can apply for honors again! (just remind your son not to slack off in college like I am right now). It’s definitely a goal he can reach here if he works hard.

He loves it. We are from the Chicago area so it was hard to send him away so far but we are happy the decision. Clemson is a very special place.

Thanks, badfan. It’s good to hear that your son is having a great experience.
We’re in NY with similar concerns about the distance, but my son LOVED Clemson when we went to visit, so it went on his very short list.

Thanks, again.

If you have time, feel free to share any Clemson insights you might have from the parent perspective. I check the Clemson threads regularly.

if you have any questions about Clemson, you’re welcome to add me on facebook, email me at ptong@clemson.edu, or send me a message here and I’ll make sure to get back to you ASAP!

The most impressive thing to my wife and I are the quality of the people we have met at Clemson. This includes the faculty, staff, vendors and the students. Every one we have met shows a tremendous pride in Clemson. They are also very happy to be there. My wife thinks there is something in the water. I could not be happier with my sons decision for college. Hope that helps.

Thanks, badfan. It’s really nice to know that the parents are as happy as the student!
We still haven’t heard anything from Clemson, and Monday is a holiday, so we’re hoping to hear on Tuesday.

Thanks to you to, Pierre. I’ve been following the Clemson threads for quite some time, and you’ve already, unknowingly, given me a ton of info. So thank you for that. I’ve copied down your email address and will give it to my son if he’s admitted.

We just got word from my son’s high school that he is officially a National Merit Finalist. Does anyone know if Clemson gives scholarships to NMFs? I know Univ. of So. Car. does.
(I’ll probably call Clemson on Monday.)

In the PSAT booklet that you received when registering for the PSAT, there should’ve been a list of schools that offer scholarships to NMFs. I remember seeing Clemson on that list when I took the PSAT but I can’t remember anymore.

You should probably ask the admissions office about that.

I went to the scholarship office and asked about NMF scholarships last October, and they said they give $1,000/year, which I believe is the bare minimum a school can give while still being called a “NMSC sponsor school.” Typical of Clemson as far as scholarships go I guess.

Carolina’s “automatic in-state tuition plus $6,000” is really attractive to my parents; unfortunately Clemson is really attractive to me.

My son received his acceptance package today.
He’s very excited! He’s going to have a tough decision ahead of him.
Thanks to all for your input.

I’ve been accepted to Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Sewanee, and Rhodes.

For some reason, even though all of my other acquaintances received their Clemson letter today, I didn’t. I am really getting fed up with Clemson even though they’re my number 1 choice so it’s looking like either UT or SC.
