Hi, guys, scholarship money aside, getting nationally commended is very impressive. I know people who got into Ivies and other top colleges not making SF but were commended, so don’t stress out if you are thinking about college application!
what are you guys talking about, the cutoff for CA will definitely be around 210-211
From the below list of CA NMSF list, I am guessing there are over 1,700 NM Semifinalists from CA every year.
@websensation
From page 29 it said that CA had 2,027 semifinalists in 2014.
I only have a 222…with so many people guessing around 220, I fear that I’m cutting it extremely close.
@mochilate1897
Check these links out, their reasoning is a lot more substantial than the previous estimates that were putting CA around 210.

@fisisk Thank you for the links. What’s “Sliding Scale Cutoff,” though?
@TiggerDad
Earlier on the page “Our initial estimations were based on a “sliding scale” method. Because the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is not using your PSAT score (i.e. the score ranging from 320 to 1520) and is instead converting to a Selection Index Score which ranges from 48-228, we made those estimations with the mindset that the choice to use a convoluted Selection Index was so that these scores could more easily be compared to previous PSAT scores”
lol gg CA then
219, 220 will be CA. Maybe lower. Any higher would be absolutely ludicrous… NOBODY would get it. If you have 220 or above, FEEL SAFE!
Look at page 29 of the below NM Annual Report for a helpful table.

For CA, slightly over 6,000 kids got Commendations (based on national cutoff score) in 2014, and out of those, over 2,000 (around 30%) made NMSFs. That means once we know the Commendation score, we should be able to take a reasonable guess at the NMSF cutoff SI score for CA.
@websensation
Yes, but that’s always been the case, lol.
