So this is in regards to my half brother (same father different mother) . He lives in Arizona with his mother and is currently a junior in high school. He wants to go to college in california but a problem is that out of state tuition is ridiculous. So what our dad suggested was to have him move in with us before the end of his junior year. would that work in order to have him become a california resident?

There are 3 systems in CA (community college, Cal State, and Univ of Cal) with 3 different methods of determining residency.

For the UC schools take a look at [UCLA Registrar’s Office: Residence for Tuition Purposes–Minors](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/residence/minors.htm) The UC schools are real sticklers for the rules, so I’m not to to presume to be able to give advice on whether your circumstances match the rules.

I think he should be fine. His Dad is a CA resident and pays CA taxes. His son is dependent on him. But I would call the UC financial aid office anyway. But you would think that he could stay in arizona until he finishes high school.

" Dependent child of a California resident A student who has not been an adult resident of California for more than one year, and who is the natural or adopted dependent child of a California resident who has been a resident for more than one year immediately prior to the residence determination date, may be entitled to a waiver of nonresident supplemental tuition until the student has resided in California for the minimum time necessary to become a resident so long as continuous attendance is maintained at a post-secondary institution."

If he moves to Cali with his dad and applies to college from a Cali h.s. - he will be fine.
