I'm thinking about majoring in both (double major). Seems like Chem E is very compatible with economics, and I am in a dilemma that may allow me to do both.

Currently I am a sophomore. Long story short, didn't know I wanted to do chem E until this semester (but I have always loved chem), and didn't know I liked econ until last summer. I have knocked down all the gen chem, o chem, physics, and math requirements for chem E. I can't start any chem E upper divs until next fall semester at the earliest, so I have essentially a free semester in Spring where I'm just doodling. Moreover, since ChemE 140 can only be taken in fall, I have to take an extra semester anyway. Which is where econ comes in...

Granted, I have taken none of the econ courses, but I imagine that by next fall I can finish or be in the process of taking econ 1, stats, and econ 100 or 101, so I can apply to the major at that time.

I know Chem E is difficult, but how hard is econ? Are there a lot of papers to write (which I hate)? Is this plan doable or is it suicide?

No papers ever. It’s mostly problem solving, at least in Econ 1, 100A/100B. None of them are hard at all compared to science classes, and the curves are nice.

Just wondering- how do you know you’re interested in Econ if you haven’t even taken Econ 1?

Oh, I probably should’ve specified why. I took a microeconomic class at CC last summer, and thought it was really interesting. Unfortunately I opted not to take the macroeconomic portion… so thus I need Econ 1 sometime before next fall.

I’m a chemE major and I can tell you chemE classes are difficult. I thought about double majoring as well with econ and gave up after taking chemE 140. But I guess if you can survive 140 and get a decent grade, you’re smart enough to do anything.

if you wanna do some serious econ (read grad school) you need to load up upper div math. that also is hard (much harder depending on you). take econ 101a, econ 104, econ 141, math 110, math 104 to see if you like econ.
