Wow, that was the most heart-warming story I have heard all week, quynh! I realized that competition is actually one of the things I was most concerned about at Cornell, and this thread eased my mind.

My Cornell experience was many moons ago but similar to the experiences in this thread. Cornell is a very challenging place ... frankly, for me, that is one of the draws ... but it is not kid-against-kid ... it's more like kids-against-institution. When there is a killer prelim coming up we didn't study in isolation focusing on beating each other ... instead, you see a bunch of people you know well (including some of the best friends you'll ever make in your life) struggling against the big-bad-prelim ... and you're all in that boat together and will help each other through. I LOVED Cornell and proving, that with help from my friends and classmates, that I could do well at a very tough school.

BTW - this is not unique to Cornell ... I have been to 3 top tier schools and the same thing happened each place ... very tough academics and very smart-great classmates working together to learn and survive. together.

A strange analogy from reality TV - my daughter loves American Idol ... which is as competitive a situation as exists ... when we watch the show there seems to be an interesting behavior pattern. These folks are thrown together in tough competitive situation (similar to Cornell Engineering?) and, to me, it looks like their first concern during the eliminations is for their competitor/friend who got the boot and not that they are staying in the competition ... they appear to all be in it together against the competition.

Thank you wharf! :) (What a funny thing it is to be able to gain a sense of one's personality through posts!)

3togo, I love that comparison and it makes perfect sense. Even when everyone is working towards the same goal you can't help but form a sense of camaraderie with those around you.

I can't wait 133 days for this...........

I can surely wait 133 days for intense competition and hard work...however, for cornell its worth it...

It wont be too terrible at first, but as you progress through your career here at Cornell, it will get more and more time consuming between more classes, harder work, clubs, etc. I am a junior now and I am doing much more work than I did as a freshman. This past week alone I have spent 12 hours/day (which is probably more than most people do haha) at the library after classes. I have been getting to bed around 6am. But during most of the semester I spend only 3-4 hours at the library a night. Its all worth it though.

shhh dont make those posts, you'll scare away the other prefrosh!

Dude. I'm hardcore, study 24/7, steal your notes and sell them on eBay, spill coffee on your computer disks, lock you in your dorm room so you can't go to class, spread rumors you cheat on tests and plagiarize HARDCORE CUT THROAT.

;)

but do you throw students off gorges and frame the incidents as "suicides?" if you dont do that you're not hardcore

I think students do that on their own. We know that students just jump into the gorges on a nightly basis at such a cut-throat school as Cornell.

Yes, they commit suicide at Cornell by the dozens each night!

Hearing from you guys, it makes one think Cornell is the MOST cut-throat of all the Ivies.
No... makes me think Cornell is the,
The hardcore cut-throat concentration camp of all cut-throat universities!

It probably even has its own degree in how to cut a classmate's throat...while they're asleep at night of course:)

Now I am willing to pay the extra 800 BUCKs to demand a single room dorm, so I wouldn't be murdered when I sleep, if I ever get the chance to sleep at all in Cornell, with the 24/7 schedule stuff. PLeeeaase tell me there're more singles available?!? I will have to wait until May 1 or just before to decide to go to cornell.

I've even heard about a secret garden in Cornell, you know where they grow poisonous plants that you can administer to your "friends" and they'll be so "drugged" as becoming dumber than a doorknob, but definitely won't die because it is not a fatal toxin, and chemistry labs cannot identify the wonderful drugger. Come on guys, what's the plant's name?:)

What else do you do at Cornell? Let's hear more positive things. There probably arent many more hardcore cut-throat people than some of my hs mates. I guess I'd shudder when I have eye contact with them, if I evendare to LOOK. I know,, because when you walk by them,... you get the tingly feeling as if you're in a movie nightmare. .time to WAKE UP!

well the reason they accept so many students too each class and have such a large university is because so many students jump, if you know what I mean...

ah, i remember freshman year, and it's about an hour before the famous psych 101 no makeups unless you do die be here for the final. so i was about to go to it, and the girls next to me somehow got their door jammed, and were screaming and shouting and crying trying to get out to get to the same psych final...what an extremely stressful moment for her.

wait are you serious? thats really funny lol if thats as stressful as cornell gets...
