Calling all UVA BMEs!

I am an incoming freshman to UVA next year and I hope to get into the BME program in my sophomore year.

At this point, I have every intention of pursuing a pre-med track in conjunction with the BME major.

I am mainly hoping for a little input from anyone in the BME department or just anyone who knows anything about this type of track from personal experience or from observation.

QUESTIONS:
Are there a lot of extra courses to fulfill the pre-med req's?

How do BME students with a pre-med track usually fair (Both academically and socially)?

Are the pre-med advisers, as advertised on the website, efficient in helping to structuring a schedule to complete all the req's?

How extensive is the interaction between BMEs and the UVA hospital? Is the program really more of a part of the Med school than the Engi School (This interaction was a big selling point for me in choosing UVA for BME)?

Any input or help at all would be much appreciated! Thanks!

16% of my class (2010) are now in med school, including two others besides me here at UVa. Most others are in grad school – I haven’t seen stats regarding how many ultimately go to med school.

Go into SEAS because you want to make things – don’t go into BME because you want to go to med school.

Thanks for the link!

I am personally fascinated with BME (tissue and organ engineering piqued my interests). I was mainly hoping to go to med school to become a research doctor in the BME field and if that did not work out, I would go to grad school instead.

I felt that just a Bio major would be too bland for me, and I would rather go BME at this point.

EDIT: what about the engineering curriculum makes it so much harder to maintain that high GPA than the other majors?
