Calling College Board out on their greed.

For all I know the cost of halving the delivery time is doubly “exuberant.” Can’t tell you.

If you think no one else here feels your pain, you need to think again.

Wow, lot’s of passive aggressive attacking of @nobelcollegekid going on here. Yes, Nobel, your plan of everything being free is not really reasonable, but everyone defending collegeboard and attacking its criticizers aren’t really understanding the core complaint. The entire point of this thread, the reason that everyone is mad at CB for it’s prices even though the ACT costs more to send. They aren’t using our money wisely, they consistently screw up and that is why so many people are upset.

My experience is not that they “consistently screw up”. I see very few complaints out here of mistakes on CB’s part. Sometimes students don’t understand how to send specific scores, or mark the wrong boxes – user error is not uncommon. I think a lot of posters agree that the sending of scores could be speedier. But guess what? If your score is not in the day the rest of your app is in, do you know what colleges do? They just hold your app until all the pieces are received! Students are always out here panicking over this (parents, too). But a lot of the colleges discussed out here get thousands of apps on the same day. They can’t review all right away anyway. And the colleges that don’t get as many apps? Well… they just want you to apply and hope you will attend.

This is a high stress time for students (and there is a stunning amount of rudeness in new student posters across CC this week, don’t think we have seen this level of nastiness in the past during this week – and I don’t mean just this thread). So we get that you are taking out some of your frustration on an easy target. But it would show some maturity to try to understand the business model of the test services and colleges, too. You have an ant’s level view of it right now.

@intparent I believe that this is where I differ. I think because our experiences have been different, we give the CB different amounts of leeway. I understand that they are a business that provides a lot of services, but they have screwed me three times now. With the shipping of these scores, the misadministered June SAT, and never giving me the option to send scores in the Nov 2012 SAT. Man I have had a pretty bad experience with the college board. And also, if you look at the SAT and ACT preparation forum a lot of people are frustrated at the CB.

And sorry if I came off as rude and defensive, but to be perfectly honest and to end the passive aggressive tone prevalent in this thread, I feel like sometimes the posts from experienced users such as yourself and a few others come across as condescending. Especially with statements like this “You have an ant’s level view of it right now.” and "For all I know the cost of halving the delivery time is doubly “exuberant.” There’s honestly no need for that. And there is no need for the constant posturing that is happening on both sides. Again I apologize for my behavior

Well, no. CB also sells the names/contact info of students to colleges and other interested buyers. 40 cents per name. Plus a couple of enrollment planning services.

https://collegeboardsearch.collegeboard.org/pastudentsrch/support/licensing/pricing-payment-policies

CB also owns/runs the CSS Profile, the PSAT, all AP exams and curriculum, CLEP, etc.

Out of curiosity, what would be a reasonable number of errors per 100,000? “Constantly” can’t be correct.

@50N40W Whatever mistakes they do make tend to be on a massive scale. The most recent ones are the June SAT where some sections weren’t included and the October score sending issue where the new system didn’t work properly resulting in scores not being received in time for early action/decision deadlines. I have no clue as to why they would implement a new system during the busiest month they have (October) which might ruin some student’s lives forever. Such as those applying to UMichigan who said they will not accept late scores under any circumstances. I feel for those applying to UMichigan.

“Sorry… but…” Is never an appropriate format for an apology. And your “passive aggressive” examples are merely more mature posters responding to openly rude posts, but trying to not be as obnoxious as the rude posters. You tested late – yet you expect no consequences. What is your Nov 2012 example? That should be a score from 9th grade for you, correct?

@intparent I accept your criticisms and will change my behavior accordingly, is there any reason why you can’t do the same? You are being condescending. And yes, that is an example from the 9th grade, it changes nothing about my experience. And how exactly is taking the June SAT testing late?

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
If anyone has yet to familiarize him/herself with Terms of Service, might I suggest that you read it here. In the meantime, enough of the snarky comments.

You aren’t testing late unless you test in December of your senior year. CB guarantees that your scores will be sent in time for Nov. 1 when taking the Oct. SAT but they did not do that this year.

Ranting about College Board is fun

You are missing the point – the colleges will wait. You are obsessing over something that doesn’t matter. If you look back at past years in CC, this discussion occurs regularly. The colleges have thousands of apps to look at – they do not penalize for scores that arrive a few days late. I do think there was a complaint earlier in the thread about the cost of rushing scores. The CB website is quite clear about those costs, which you can see when you plan your test dates.

Sorry, I was asking for clarification about what happened with your Nov 2012 scores. Was thinking if they were taken in 8th grade, they would have disappeared (as documented by CB, that is what they do). But that doesn’t make sense as your problem, unless you have skipped a grade. So what problem occurred with that test score?

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

Ranting against the CB is fine; demeaning other members is not.

@intparent Ah, I see. Yeah the CB never gave me my 4 free score reports. That was never offered to me when I signed up. Maybe in 2012 the system was set up so you had to contact the CB or something? I never mentioned it because it felt like it may have been an error on my side. But when I signed up for my freshman SAT there was never any mention of 4 free score reports. Anyone else had this problem? And yes, even though it was 9th grade, at the time my M+CR was within range for the schools I planned on applying to (Wake Forest Barely, Elon, NC A&T), and maybe it would have impressed them or something. Most likely inconsequential tough.

Man I’m freaking out right now. I rushed my SAT to Purdue Oct 25 and it is still pending. Purdue has rolling admissions!!! I may miss out. I feel like throwing up. So much for my dream school.

Hey man have you called Purdue? I p. sure College Board has explained that the fault is theirs. The only thing you can really do is call Purdue tomorrow and (very) calmly explain your situation. That’s the advice that’s been given elsewhere.

I emailed them but I haven’t received a response.

I recall the info being there from 2011 registration. Did you register yourself, or have help from a parent (since parents have to provide credit card info, they often do the registration)? Maybe they were driving on the screens where it is asked. Although the website has always been pretty clear on those 4 scores and timing for signing up for them.

As an aside, I personally would not recommend that anyone send 9th grade scores anyway. Given the typical timing of math through pre-calc and the added reading/writing skills most students pick up over the next two years, you are bound to score higher junior year. Colleges will just wonder why you are taking it so many times.

@intparent Yeah, this is the most likely scenario. And at the time I had a very passionate and naive love for Wake Forest, so realizing that I missed the chance to do what I considered showing off disappointing me.
@nobelcollegekid Call them. There’s no 2 day wait time on a phone call  . I know that you’re probably nervous, it took me an hour of prepping to contact my colleges and then the CB, but it’ll settle you down a bit.
