CalPoly or SJSU for Business

ID: Non-Traditional Transfer Student Accepted at SLO & SJSU
Considerations:

CalPoly:

  • Pro’s: Great school, small class sizes. Learn by Doing Motto.
  • Cons: $24,000 more expensive(I’m local to San Jose and will not have to pay Rent if I go to SJSU). CalPoly seemed not too friendly towards Transfer students. Even had a few disparaging remarks about how transfers are “poorer quality” students from a professor there. Majority students are very young(out of my age group). Campus seemed less diverse(I’m a minority and also a member of the LGBT community) and I’m not sure if I’m necessarily crazy about that(this one’s not too important on the priority list for me). Far from home (3 hour drive) compared to SJSU. People at open house seemed to be repeating the same things; almost as if they were reading from a script.

SJSU:
Pros: I’m Local to San Jose - SJSU will be at least $24,000 cheaper as I live in a home with family which is paid off. Maybe worth it to use that money for Grad school? Lots of Transfer and also Non-Traditional Students on Campus. Extremely diverse.
Cons: Campus is kind of depressing(for me personally, but at least I’ll be home with my family hence close to an emotional support system.)

To me your post says attend SJSU. Once you get involved in your classes and campus life, I am sure SJSU will fit your needs.

Thank You!
I should have read what I wrote myself to see what I was leaning toward… Haha. I forgot to mention an important Con for SJSU. Their Graduation rates are around 40-48% compared to the 74-80% Rate at CalPoly. I’m not sure what causes this disparity and I am a bit concerned about it. I, for one, am motivated to make it through Graduation regardless of the statistics, but I’m not sure why more than half of SJSU students don’t graduate!

Graduation rates can be deceiving since many factors can contribute to lower graduation rates: Changing majors which is not easily done at SLO, having to go from full-time student to part time due to financial issues, just being picky about class times and not getting into your needed classes. If you are a motivated student, you should have no issues on graduating on time. Good Luck.

Thank You Gumbymom! You were of great help with confirming my decision! I just submitted my acceptance to SJSU!
